Deftones, Incubus, and Taproot
Monday November 6th, 2000- International Ballroom:  Atlanta, GA
OK so I saw the Deftones last night here in Atlanta and they were awesome of course. Melina and I got there at 11 (yes 11 am, don't laugh) but to our surprise we weren't the first ones there...there was this 16 year old kid from Alabama there. It was really cold and he didn't have a jacket and so we felt sorry for him. Then it started rainingman did that suck. I hate it when it's like cold and rainy. When we got there at 11, incubus and taproot's buses were there. I saw Steve and Mike from taproot walking around talking on cell phones. We didn't get to meet them until around 2 though. they were really nice, especially Steve. We met him first, got a picture and his autograph. Jarrod and Mike signed and took pictures after they had come back from eating. I was the first one to go up to mike and I saw that he didn't look so good. He said that he had just eaten Chinese food and wanted to throw up...but he was OK for the show. Jarrod, the drummer, was really nice too, his girlfriend was with him. She seemed all right I guess. She flew in from Michigan to be with him, she was at the airport for 10 hours.... We also got pics with Jarrod and Mike. The Deftones came around 3 I think. Chi was so nice. That same 16 year old kid, who didn't have a jacket, kept shivering and so chi went onto the bus and gave the kid HIS jacket...how nice was that? He also gave someone a beanie hat. I gave him poems to read and he thanked me for them, cause he said it gave him something to do on the road.  He talked to Melina for a long time because she writes to him on the Deftones message board. He remembered her name and the fact that she's always telling him to be good (with his drinking and stuff) He also talked to her a lot about Buddhism...and let me tell you Chi is so smart. He knows so much about...well everything. He signed stuff for us, but wouldn't take pictures.  He said, he stopped taking pictures a week ago because "it doesn't make me happy" Hmm, we were so sad about that but it was OK. We also met Steph who seemed out of it as usual. he looks a lot better in person, though. He was nice enough to take pictures and sign also. I didn't see Abe or frank anywhere, and of course Chino was no where to be found. It seemed as though he showed up at the last minute and a few people got his autograph. The show was weird because something really bad happened. The venue they played at is called the International Ballroom. It's kinda shoddy and old, and something bad usually happens when a concert takes place there. It gets SOOOO hot in there and lots of people pass out and get hurt...Well I was RIGHT in front because we had gotten there so early. the guards were talking about changing the railing or something because it didn't seem stable enough...but they didn't....we were fine when taproot played, cause too many people weren't pushing on us. But half way into Incubus' first song, part of the railing gave way and I went down...I couldn't believe it...I was just thinking, "oh my god, this doesn't happen, this SHOULDNT happen" and I was just praying that too many people wouldn't fall on me. I kinda fell off to the side but my friend Melina fell more forwards and lots of people fell on her...she said she thought her leg was going to snap...This one guy's finger got stuck under the railing when it fell and the tip of his finger got cut right off...he started freaking out and saying, "oh my god! my finger!" you could see the blood running down...some had even splattered on this girl's face and shirt who was standing next to him. I was so shook up...the police were there and they were yelling for the paramedics...Incubus told everyone to back up so those on the ground could stand back up. I was OK so I just stood up and walked backstage.  Incubus left the stage and the guards put up a metal barrier which they really should have done BEFORE the show started. I stayed backstage for the rest of the show (there as no way I was going to get my spot back, right up front, and I wasn't going to the back) I didn't have a backstage pass, so I kinda just kept to myself and hoped no one would notice...and no one did. Anyway I bet Incubus feels really bad that that happened, especially since it was during their set. They came back on to play, and the Deftones came out after and rocked of course. Chino kept saying that it was hot..."I know they call this HotLanta and now I know why. It's Devil Hot in here!" And it was, but it was freezing outside. After they played, I asked one of the guys in the Deftones crew if he could give me a pic. He didn't give me 1 but 5! I They were all different too. that was really nice of him. I gave my friend Melina one when I met her back at the car. We were both very tired and still freaked out at about what had happened so we didn't even stay to try and meet chino, Abe, or Frank. But that's OK cause we're seeing them in TN and SC. So all in all it was a cool show, but that one part made it really weird. One cool thing is that when I was backstage, I was standing next to Stephen when Incubus played. I've never been backstage for that big of a show before so that was cool. and I would not have gotten those pics if I hadn't been backstage. SO I guess that's one good thing that came out of that scary mishap...
