Taproot, Deadsy and Dredg
Tuesday August 20th, 2002- The 40 Watt: Athens, GA
Melina and I headed down to the 40 watt a after 7 some time. We had driven by their earlier and had seen Mike DeWolf walking down the street, so we knew that at least that Taproot were there. Saw Elizabeth at the record store nearby so i talked to her for a bit. Then we saw Akeem. He said he had parked his car somewhere (didn't know where) and it had taken him like 45 minutes to find the place. He looked out of breath. poor guy. It was still early, so the three of us went to Best Buy at I got the used cd. I'd feel bad about burning theirs. Went back to the 40 watt and just stood around until doors. I met some people from the Taproot message board, Nathan and Veronica, and they were really nice.  The chronic md boys also came to the show. Doors opened a little after 9. I was actually on the passlist for the station which I was happy and surprised about. Saved me $12 so that was good.  While we were waiting for dredg to play, I looked over to the bar, and saw someone who looked like [jordan]. SO i pointed him out to akeem, and he said, "that IS jordan" so we all went over there and said hi. THe FUNNIEST thing though was that Jordan, who was with Joy, and Akeem were standing right next to each other, and this kid comes up to Akeem and asks, "hey are you in [minus]?" and Akeem says, "Yeah I'm Jordan. Nice to meet you," as he shakes the kids hand. Jordan is cracking up, and so are Melina, Joy and I. then Akeem says, "Nah, i'm just kidding. I'm not Jordan." That was pretty fucking funny though.  So dredg were first. and wow. THey're just..wow. I found the singer's voice and lyrics a bit odd at first, not bad, just different, but as their show went on, i was just really impressed. Lots of cool and unique sounds, lots of energy, very very melodic. Good stuff. They are definitely an athens kind of band.  Next was Deadsy. And um...huh? Elijah Blue and his band are weird. They are a poor man's Orgy, and having to sit through them made those 45 minutes drag on for what seemed like forever.   Taproot was the last band to play. They went on at like 12 or something. They were SO good. The best I've EVER seen them. Stephen's voice sounded really good. The crowd was just going nuts for them, which was weird 'cause i didn't think anyone around here would be into them. But there were all of these boys around us and they were just fucking going off. Stephen got into the pit a few times and moshed. And he stage dived during the last song which was the song that's the new single. They played, Again and Again, Emotional Times, Mirror's Reflection, I, Now, 1 Nite Stand, Myself, Day After Day, and others. I was so into their entire set, because its been so long since I've seen them, and when it's been a long time since you've seen a band, they sound even better to you.  After their set, I had this great big urge to talk to them. It felt like old times, so i wanted to at least talk to Jarrod. And I got a chance. After the show, he was outside with the rest of the guys meeting fans. I called his name and he came over to us, and I asked if he remembered us and he said that he did. Melina and I talked to him for a good while. He was always nice to us back when we saw him all these times, and things haven't changed. he's still a sweet guy. Then I wanted to give Stephen two of my jelly bracelets. So I took off a blue and a purple one, and i went up to him when the last person walked away

me: hi
him: hey
me: good show
him: thanks
me: can i get a picturee?
him:of course

Akeem takes the picture

me: can i give you two of these (I hand him the bracelets)
him: only if you take one of mine. Which one do you want?

So I took his only blue one. haha. I remember on the back to school tour, he would trade bracelets with people all the time during shows. I didnt think he still wore them though. Then he was talking about how he was pretty surprised that so many people came out to see them in this little old town. And I told him that we might go to the Atlanta show, and he said, "please do."  After a little bit, it was time for him to go back to the bus, so he shook my hand goodbye and i said, "i might see you tomorrow." and he said, "I hope so." haha. It was so good seeing taproot again, and getting to talk to Jarrod and Stephen was definitely fun. Its like seeing an old friend that you havent talked to in years.
