Grayton Beach SP, Santa Rosa Beach, FL

We left Fort Wilderness about 8:30 this morning.  It was easy traveling through Orlando today, no traffic on Sunday morning.  Keith was heading back home from Jacksonville, FL today.  We met him at a rest area on I-10 for a picnic lunch.  It was nice to see him again for awhile.

With the hour loss to Central time, we got to Grayton Beach SP  around 3:30pm.  The camping area is nice with trees between the sites.  The camping area is a loop on a bay behind the Gulf sand dunes.  There are about 6-7 sites that are backed up to the water.  Those sites were taken when we made the reservation and we got site 32.

This beach was voted #1 beach in the nation in 1999 and again in 2005.  We went down for a walk on the beach after supper and while it is nice, we like the beach at either the Florida St George Island SP or St Joseph Peninsula SP better.  The problem with this beach is that you can easily see the condo's both up and down the beach at the park boundary.  This is not the case with the above two parks.  It sure is quiet here though.  It will give us a chance to recover from the hectic pace at Disney World.

I woke up this morning with a very sore knee.  I must have twisted it when we were strolling on the beach yesterday.   We wandered into town to do some shopping and check out the area and then went down to the beach for an hour or so.   It was a beautiful day at the beach.  The waves were just ripples and the water was aqua blue against the bright white powder sand.   We have to be careful with sunburn.  Our arms, legs and faces are tanned from 4 months in Melbourne.  But we are 'red necks'.  Our shoulders and chests look like we just got off the plane from the frozen north....

Another beautiful day at the beach....  We went to the beach for an hour or so in the morning and then came back to the trailer for lunch before we got burned.  After lunch, we went back to the beach to enjoy the day.  My knee is getting a bit better, but still is quite sore when I walk on it.   No long walks on the beach to hunt for the elusive sand dollars.

We had planned on going to the National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola Naval Air Station tomorrow.  But with my knee still so sore, we will pass on that and come back another time.

We enjoyed a few hours on the beach today.  My knee was still sore, so the trip to Pensacola was out.  We did see something interesting on the beach though.  A man, woman and boy came over near to us on the beach.  The first thing we saw was the woman undressing the boy to put on his bathing suit.  No big deal, see that all the time....  Next, we look over and the man was stripping off his shorts and underwear.  He then put on his bathing suit.  This left all the folks (about 30) on the beach with wide eyes.....  Next, the woman takes off her top, bra and puts on her bikini top.  After she was down to her underwear bottoms, she discretely wrapped a towel around her waist to pull down the underwear and put on the bikini bottoms (Sorry, no photos... ).   They thought nothing of it.  They must have been visiting from Europe.  They are much more liberal and casual about nudity there.  But you do not see that very often at beaches here....

After a shower, we drove into Destin to eat at McGuire's Irish Pub.  This place has to be seen to be believed.  There are dollar bills hanging all over the walls and ceiling.  People sign and date the bills and then they are hung up.  Also, they brew their own great beer and the food is fantastic.  The best deal on the menu is the bean soup.  It was $.18 cents when the Pub opened, and it still is....  I had the Shepherds Pie and a couple pints of Wild Irish Raspberry Wheat  and it was all I could do to finish it up.  It was very good.
