Fouls

A foul is when contact occurs between opposing players, interfering with the play. Fouls are often called in the endzone, when the play is more contentious. The beauty of Ultimate allows us to referee our own fouls. Honesty is the best policy - if contact has truly disrupted the play, it should be acknowledged. The procedure is as follows (between player A calling a foul and player B being the alleged fouler):

Player A calls "Foul!", loud enough for everyone to hear.
Player B is given two options:

"Contest!" means that player B believes a foul did not actually occur. The disc returns to the thrower where the stall count left off. This is essentially a "do-over".

"Uncontested!" means that player B realizes a foul did indeed occur, and the play commences where the disc would have been caught. If this occurs in the endzone, the play commences at the endzone line.

Note: we won't get extra spirit points for letting a team get away with an improper or face-saving call. Resolving the issue quickly by calling "Contest" or "Uncontested" will make the game infintely more pleasant - both teams benefit by a quick resolution - that way, we don't dwell on it.

Strips

A "strip" is another name for a foul, when the disc is hit or grabbed out of the opposing players hands upon catching This can be contested as well. Technically, it is called a "Catching Foul", but everyone calls it a "strip".

Uncontested: Disc remains with the player who had it.
Contest: Turnover at that point if possession would have changed, otherwise it goes back to the thrower. An endzone strip, contested, goes to the goalline.

Note: we won't get extra spirit points for letting a team get away with an improper or face-saving call. Resolving the issue quickly by calling "Contest" or "Uncontested" will make the game infintely more pleasant - both teams benefit by a quick resolution - that way, we don't dwell on it.

Spirit

Positive spirit points should be given for:

Courteousness
Fairness
Intensity
A great song
Good attendance
Letting rookies play
Swift resolutions
A sense of enjoyment and humour
Special costumes
Gifts
Wacky plays

I think a 10 should be given out only in truly outstanding circumstances, because they do occur sometimes.

Negative spirit points should be given out for:

Tardiness, especially at the start and the pulls
Unfair calls
Laziness
A lame-ass song
Poor attendance or defaulting
Not letting rookies play their part
Drawn-out arguments
Trash-talking

Please let us know what you think!
