Chapter Nine

"Oh my god! I can't believe we won!" Sean wouldn't stop shrieking.

"Sean! Shut up, we've all heard it 50 million times, we, and everyone else in the world, know that we won and that you can't believe it." Tabby retorted futilely.

"See? I told you guys we should enter and we did and we won!" Chrystal said. "And now, if you don't mind, I'm going upstairs to get ready for bed."

Chrystal bounced up the stairs and went into the bathroom. When she got in, she locked the door and sat down on the floor, exhausted, she had barely eaten all day. She studied the pattern of the tiles on the floor trying to get some strength back before reaching over to her purse and grabbed her manicure kit. She needed to feel the rush of blood flowing through her veins, it was like a natural high.

She grabbed the tiny cuticle scissors from the manicure set and drew a fine, thin line across her arm, smiling and sighing gently. Feeling alot better, she dragged the scissors across her skin again and again before finally she blacked out.

Flashback:
"Miss Evans?" A doctor came out of the OR, removing his mask.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry--"

"Noooo!!!" Chrystal interupted him, running into the operating room. She saw a thin form covered on the table, completely covered in a white sheet.

"Miss? You can't be in here." A nurse said, trying to pull her out of the OR. Chrystal pushed the young nurse away and pulled back the sheet. There was her sweet, youthful mother, as if in a deep deep sleep. Chrystal started to scream her head off, hoping that it was only a dream.

End Flashback:
"Chrystal!!" Ashley shouted through the door. "It's locked..." He told the others. They had all rushed up to the bathroom when they heard Chrystal's bloodcurdling scream. "I'm going to kick the door in, I'll pay for it." He said as he raised his foot. The door swung open on contact without even breaking the door itself and they all saw Chrystal, lying a huge pool of blood.

"Holy... shit..." Dan whispered.

"Guys, go downstairs, give me some room." Ashley commanded the others.

"Do you want us to call an ambulance?" Janie asked concered.

"No," Ashley felt for a pulse. "She's only unconcious, let me see if I can rouse her first, then we'll call." The others went downstairs to anxiously wait in the living room.

"Chrys?" Ashley grabbed a towel to clean up the blood a little and then pulled her onto his lap. She slowly started to come around.

"Ashley..." She started groggily.

"It's alright, what happened?" Ashley's blue eyes sparkled in the light, tears about to fall from his eyes.

"Ash... don't cry... I..." Her voice was really really weak. "I..." She was didn't want to tell him she had done this herself. "I was getting the scissors to do my nails and then... I fainted, I guess... and I woke up like this..." She lied as she leaned more against Ashley even more exhausted.

"Baby, you've lost alot of blood, I've got to go call an ambulance."

"No!!" She screamed, sitting up and draining herself. "Please?" He pulled her back into his lap and against his chest.

"Babe, I've taken first aid so I can tell you've lost alot of blood, you need a hospital."

"Please, if you've taken first aid just bandage me up. Please." She pleaded with him.

Ashley sighed and laid her gently on the floor and went to the medicine cabinet to get antiseptic, gauze and tape. He kneeled down beside her and bandaged up her arms.

"What was the scream about?" He asked softly.

"I had a... flashback while I was unconcious... it was my mom when she died... she and Dad had been at a party late one night and it was raining while Dad was driving home and he missed the turn off the freeway..." She started to sob.

"You don't have to continue." Ashley offered gently.

"I want to... I've never told anyone and it's time I talked about it... the counselors said I should, said it would theraputic... but I never had anyone I wanted to tell."

"Alright then but don't tire yourself which is easy for you to do since you've lost so much blood."

"So Dad missed the freeway turn and... the car... it crashed into the guard rail and flipped... several times and then it hit a tree... Dad died instantly but Mom... Mom was taken to a hospital where they tried to do emergency surgery... she never made it..." By this time, Chrystal was practically hysterically from all the crying.

"I'm done with your arms. Let me carry you to bed." He stood up and then stooped down and picked Chrystal up in his arms. She leaned her head against his chest and listened to his rapid heartbeat.

"Ashley?" She asked sleepily.

"Yeah?"

"Why's your heart going so fast?"

"I thought I would lose you." He whispered and kissed her hair. Ashley stopped at the top of the stairs realizing he didn't know which room was hers.

"Hey! Which room is Chrystal's?" He whispered. She was already sleeping with her arms locked around Ashley's neck and her face nuzzled against him.

"Is she alright?" Sean asked, finally calmed down from her earlier excitement.

"I think she'll be fine, she lost a lot of blood but she should be okay." Ashley responded. "Now, which room is hers?"

"I'll show you, I'm going to bed anyways, I'm exhausted." Tabby climbed the stairs slowly. "What happened to her?" Tabby asked as she led Ashley to their room.

"She said that she took out a pair of cuticle scissors to do her nails but then fainted and had a flashback of when her mother died, that's why she screamed. She said she woke up with all the cuts, she doesn't know how they got there."

"Oh. Her bed is the purple one." Tabby pointed to it and Ashley set her down.

"Do you want to put her in something a little more comfortable?" Ashley said, looking down on Chrystal's baby blue bikini top, jean miniskirt, and heeled sandals. "And then I'll come in and tuck her in, okay?"

"Sure." Tabby grabbed Chrystal's monkey pjs and put them on before opening the door so Ashley could tuck her in better. He laid Chrystal gently in her bed, pulled the covers up and kissed her forehead then said goodnight to Tabby and went home.
