Event Report - The Regal Scottish has existed as a ranking event since 1983 and the titles has beem won the most time by Steve Davis in six occasions. In the 1985 final, Cliff Thorburn came back from needing a record seven snookers in a frame. This is the only ranking tournament without dividing into two different parts. The qualifying rounds will start on the 28th of March with the televised stage will started on Monday 3rd of April. It will be competed at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, Aberdeen, Scotland. The snooker major ranking tournament is almost to the end. That's mean more excitements will show up due to the players are on the wire of holding their nevers with the world ranking list. It is the final warm up for the big one - Embassy World Championship. Stephen Lee suffers a recurring back injury - The 25-year-old Stephen Lee, world No.6, has been forced to withdraw from the Regal Scottish due to a recurring back injury. It was at this time last year that Lee withdrew from the British Open. He had strained his neck while answering a bedside telephone and was still undergoing treatment during the World Championship. The recurrence of the injury denies Lee the opportunity to consolidate his position at number four on the provisional world ranking list. Twice a ranking tournament runner-up this season, it is hoped that Lee will be fit for this year's World Championship which begins on April 15. Stephen Hendry hit the 500th century break - Stephen Hendry hit the 500th century of his professional career in the altodigital.com Premier Snooker League yesterday. The milestone had been expected for a number of weeks. Hendry came close to making it in the Irish Masters but centuries seemed to elude him as he neared the 500 mark, which far exceeds anything achieved by any other player. The next player on the all-time century list is Steve Davis with 276, while John Higgins has yet to pass the 200 mark. "I'm glad it's over," said Hendry, " I had a few twitches in the last few weeks. I was genuinely nervous because it was being built up as a big thing." The 102 break, at Gannocely Leisure Centre in Stirling, was the world champion's 44th century of the season. This brings him within striking distance of his own record of 53 set in the 1994/95 season. "I need a good run here [in Aberdeen] and in Sheffield to challenge the record," he commented. - 3/Apr - |

Two Big Bets alerted the bookies - Betting shops have been advised to withhold payment pending further inquiries on the results of one second-round and one second-round matches. The Betting Office Licensees Association (BOLA) announced their decision following complaints from several bookmakers that the two matches concerned had attracted substantial bets on the eventual winners. But the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), alerted by BOLA of unusual betting patterns before the matches started, have yet to unearth any evidence of malpractice. They refused to reveal the identity of whom the "experts" is and issued a statement said, "We have carried out an investigation and had experts watching both games but there is no evidence that the disciplinary rules of the Association have been breached. We are in close contact with BOLA and are monitoring the situation." The matches concerned were between Sean Storey and Jimmy Michie and Patrick Wallace and Darren Clarke. Storey defeated Michie 5-3 and Wallace beat Darren Clarke 5-2. Bets for an even money on Storey's victory and GBP 6,000 at 5-6 on Wallace winning were refused by one firm of bookmakers, Done's of Manchester, at two of their shops - one locally, the other in Castleford. Nick James, a spokesman for Done's, confirmed that a punter at the firm's shop had attempted to place a bet of even GBP 10,000 on Storey to defeat Michie, a huge sum for such a low-key match. "I wasn't too happy reading about all this today though it was important for me to win the match as it gives me a top 64 ranking next season," said Wallace who yesterday was beaten 5-1 by Joe Perry. At the 1998 British Open in Plymouth, Williams Hill suspended a GBP 10,000 bets betting on the first-round match between Michie and Mark Gray, who was strongly backed from a starting price of 11-10 to 1-3. Gary prevailed 5-3 and, as on that occasion, Michie denied he was involved in any betting coup. "I have done nothing wrong. I'be been full of flu so maybe someone found that out and had a bet against me. Why would I want to throw a match, I came here with an outside chance of the top 32 and my career is taking off. I've had all this before, I'm sick of it." His opponent Storey remarked, "I played all right. Nothing special. And I have to say that's the worst I've ever seen Jimmy play." - 30/Mar - |

Hendry want to defend the title - This year's Regal Scottish takes on added importance for Stephen Hendry as he bids to win the title for the third time in four years. The Regal Scottish is the last event on the snooker calendar before the Embassy World Championship. And Hendry, who lifted the world crown for a record seventh time last year, wants to be firing on all cylinders when he begins the defence of his trophy a week later at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre on Saturday, April 15. "I'm looking forward to playing in Aberdeen again," says the 31-year-old, who beat Tony Drago 9-1 in the 1997 final and fellow Scot Graeme Dott by the same scoreline last year. "It's where I get my best support of the season - the fans really want me to win. "The Regal Scottish also happens to be the last event before Sheffield this year, which gives it extra significance. It's a time when you want to be in peak form and there's no reason why I can't win it again." Hendry also needs the ranking points as he attempts to regain his world No.1 spot. "I'm struggling to make it back to No 1 this season though I need to rely on other results," he admitted. "But even if I don't do it this year, I want to be in a good position to launch an attack next season so it's important to have good results between now and the end of the world championship." Due to John Higgins' defeat to Macro Fu, Mark J Williams is now snooker's official new world No.1
for next season after his 5-2 quarter-final victory over Anthony Hamilton. Last year's runner-up Graeme Dott kept alive the possibility of a home win with a surprise victory over Matthew Stevens. Ronnie O'Sullivan stormed into the last four as he beat Dave Harold to record his easiest victory of the week. |

Local favourit and defending champion Stephen Hendry had a shock defeat as he lost 5-2 to Matthew Stevens.
It virtually ends his last hope of regaining the No.1 spot. John Higgins moved into the last eight with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Peter Ebdon, while Ronnie O'Sullivan had another narrow win. And despite an early match after last night's late finish, Macro Fu showed no sign of tiredness as he whitewashed Gary Ponting. It is not an Irish day as both their remaining players were defeated today. |

And while Mark J Williams clinched his victory within 87 minutes, the match between Anthony Hamilton and Chris took more than four hours to sort out the winner. There were some scrappy stuffs in the other matches as well and Fergal O'Brien had the best shout, "It's better to win playing badly than to be on the plane home having played well." |

A large crowd in the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre had a short night out as all three evening matches ended 5-0. Defending champion Stephen Hendry reached the last 32, beating Lee Walker 5-0. However, fellow Scot Billy Snaddon was on the wrong end of a 5-0 result. Gary Ponting went through to the last 16 with a solid display. Englishman Dave Harold had an important victory over Steve Davis. His whitewash almost guarantee his top 16 place next season. |
