Fergal O'Brien is in the unusual position of having to defend the title just
five months after winning it. He beat Anthony Hamilton 9-7 in a classic final back in April to scoop his first major championship. But the event has been moved forward to ease congestion later in the year, and it gets underway again on Wednesday. Peter Ebdon reached his first major final in more than two years when he beat
Joe Swail 6-3 in the semi-finals. The world number 13 took a 3-0 lead but Swail clawed himself back to 5-3 before Ebdon cleared with a 129 break. He will meet Stephen Hendry in the final after the Scot edged out Ronnie O'Sullivan 6-5 in the other semi. Hendry came through a thrilling match with several large breaks and after O'Sullivan had clawed level at 5-5, hit 40 and 59 to take the decider. |

Joe Swail made a great come back while 1-4 down to Alan McManus. Ronnie O'Sullivan showed his skill to shock John Higgins and looking to make a same result to his next challenger Stephen Hendry, who finished Stephen Lee by 5-2. Peter Ebdon regained his form to beat Steve Davis by 5-2. |

Davis ended Mark Williams' hope of reaching the final. Besides, Stephen Lee and John Higgins both gave another whitewash on their way to the quarter-final. Ronnie O'Sullivan could only find his gear while 4-2 down to Paul Hunter and finally clinched the next round place by 5-4. |
