Origin

The district of Jaro has a unique story. It is said that the name "Jaro" came from the term "Sarok", one kind of container of water made from coconut husks and is use to get water from vases. But because the Chinese found it hard to pronounce the word "Sarok", they called it "Salog". When the Spanish arrived in the Philippines and here in Iloilo, they too had difficulty in pronouncing the word "Salog" so they called it "Saro". As they wrote their report through manuscript, the Spanish authorities mistook the letter "S" in the word "Saro" as the letter "J" resulting them to call it "Jaro" instead of "Saro". There are also others who say that it is possible that the word "Jaro was only a result of misunderstanding when they changed the name "Saro" to "Saharo". Other understood it as "Sa Jaro" or "In Jaro".
