LCCOC Obedience Trial Day 1 (Entry for May 26, 2007)

The first thing Red was entered in at our obedience trial was Rally Excellent A.  There were only two dogs in the class, and the other entry was our friends Cheryl and Bernie, so that was fun.  Red was excited!!  He was bouncing up and down and had a big doggy grin on his face the whole time.  For Red at a trial that is an awesome awesome thing to see.  I wish I could see some of that in agility!  Although I was quite pleased with Red's enthusiasm, it did make for a messy looking rally course.  Even though it wasn't pretty, we did all of the signs and ended up with a score of 88 out of 100 and first place.

Then was Obedience Novice A.   It was definitely a good thing that we had rally first in the morning because Red had gotten some of his bouncing over exuberant energy out but was still working happily when it came time for obedience.  Red did wonderful on the individual exercises except for lagging pretty bad on the last leg of the heel free.  We  lost fifteen points on the individual exercises, so we had a respectable 185 going into the stays.  The exercise we most often lose our Q on is the sit stay, so when Red stayed the whole time on the sit I started thinking that we would probably qualify.  But a minute or two into the down stay Red  got itchy and started scratching.  He  really got into the scratching and apparently forgot what he had been doing before the itch, so he walked across the ring over to me.  What a heartbreaker!  We lost our leg on the last exercise!

I am so so happy with Red's performance.  I think the is the first dog show where I never saw that fearful panicked look in Red's eyes.  And that's a major accomplishment, considering I've been dragging Red to show for several years now.
