A Little Bit of Obedience Practice (Entry for September 21, 2006)
I worked with Red on obedience for a couple of minutes today. We did some heeling, short stays, and retrieving. His heeling was pretty good. I actually saw some improvement on his fasts. Red used to speed up but wouldn't actually break into a run, and I started slowing down to accomodate that. We lost lots of points for the fast at trials, I'm sure. But today he started running, so I praised him like he had done something wonderful and ignored the fact that he was heeling wide. His stays were fine, of course. Red did three retrieves in a row fast and happy. The next time he was going out to get the dumbell, he started sniffing the ground, so I knew he had had enough obedience for today. But I brought him back and made him do one more good retrieve because I don't want him to think he gets to decide when to stop working.
