Back to School (Entry for August 21, 2006)
I started my second year of vet school today, and it was tough. I'm not used to sitting in lectures all day anymore, so I was bored out of my mind. Poor puppies aren't going to see much of me this semester.
I took the dogs out to the LCCOC agility field twice last week. The first time we went there was an agility course still set up from the classes, so I used that. There were no numbers, so I just made up a couple of little courses that seemed to flow. Both dogs did great. I also went to the agility field this weekend, and all of the equipment had been picked up so that the field could be mowed. I was too lazy to drag all of the obstacles out and the put them away, so I worked Sniper and Red on individual obstacle performances. I pulled out weave poles and practiced running at the poles full speed and approaching at strange angles. I couldn't get Sniper to mess up no matter what I did, but I did discover that Red could use some more work to make sure he really understands which side to enter on. Both dogs worked on the contacts, and I actually practiced the broad jump with Red! I always forget about the broad jump. Doing agility in the summer is a pain because the dogs can only work for a few minutes before they get hot and lose their enthusiasm for agility. I spend more time driving to the field and back than I do working with the dogs. But I am paranoid about not doing agility when the dogs don't feel like doing it, because I want them to be excited and never see agility as something they have to do. With Sniper and Red, agility has to be fun. 2006-08-22 03:23:09 GMT
