CAMO

Suit

What to wear as you head out to the field? The past few years there has been a debate between wearing camo and the new bright colored jerseys. The new colors are used for tourneys and such but for us rec players and weekend warriors camo is the color and should continue on for some time.

For rec players usually it comes down to is cost. New BDU's (Battle Dress uniform) that our military wears can cost you $50+ for pants/shirt ($25 each) but if you do not mind used cloths go down to your local Salvation Army or second hand store. You may find a set at 50% off or more. If you look around you may even come across a paintball jersey (this is very rare).

To keep the chance of dirt and stuff getting into your boxers from low crawing over the field I have decided to look into getting a one piece camo jump suit. After some time looking I came across a seasonal sale at the local Sports Authority of a summer suit at 30% off. Besides keeping the dirt out, during breaks I can even unzip it to cool off and since I wear shorts/t-shirt underneath I keep the whistles down as I walk around ;) (plus it keep the whisles down)

Alright, you have camo and you just modeled it infront of the girlfriend as you walked out the door for this weekends game [note: laughter in background]. As I have mentioned before just because you are wearing camo and there are a lot of trees around doesn't mean that the camo will start working. The human eye is trained to detect movement so even the best camo fails to work if you like to move about the field (not many bushes like to take off running). So remember that camo has an ON/OFF switch and it goes like this... No movement [ON] / movement [OFF]. Ya, pretty simple and I have seen numerous times of guys just resting against a tree and having players walking by not seeing them....and they did not even try to hide. Imagine if you covered yourself with some brush?

Netting

Camo suits are great but one problem they have is they sometimes do not hide the human form. If you are walking in the woods and had to do a double look at something, thinking it was a person... like stacked rocks or tree branches? One way I found of helping to defeat the problem is the use of netting. You can go spend alot of money on Gullie suites and such but I found these too expensive, heavy, and hot (especially during the summer months). I found some inexpensive netting at Walmart that is used for hunting. It was thin so you cover yourself and look through it, and lightweight enough for I tie it around my neck like a scarf. Then when I find a good "sniping position" I deploy the net over my head and wait. This is enough to break up your outline and I have had players walk by within a few feet and not been seen.

Happy hunting
