Bronze Star Medal

With Combat 'V' for Valor

Lance Corporal Bruce M. Cader

CITATION:

"For heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Machine Gun Team Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division.  On 21 April 1969, while conducting a patrol in Quang Nam Province, Lance Corporal Cader's platoon came under intense automatic weapons fire from a large enemy force entrenched in a tree line and sustained several casualties.  With complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Cader moved to a forward position and fired into the treeline.  After expending all of his ammunition, he boldly remained in the forward area and kept the enemy pinned down with hand granades.  When the medical evacuation helicopters arrived on station, Lance Corporal Cader maneuvered across the fire-swept terrain, guided the helicopters into the landing zone, and, repeatedly exposing himself to hostile fire, assisted in placing the casualties aboard.  His heroic actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in the timely evacuation of his wounded comrades.  Lance Corporal Cader's courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

The Combat Distinguishing Device is authorized.
