Katipunan Filipino Culture Night April 12, 2003
On April 12, 2003, David Kleiman and I went to the 14th Annual Katipunan Filipino Culture Night to see our friend Joy dance in it.  I have to personally say that after all the work they did, they did a magnificent job.  It is great to see people celebrate their own historic and beautiful culture.  It is inspiring to watch.  As well as being Philipino dances, there was also a play during the show about Domestic Violence in today's society.  The play was called "Just Like You" and it taught many life lessons about Filipinos living in present day America.
This is the outside of the building at the California Theatre of Performing Arts in San Bernardino, California.  It reminded me of Paramount Theatre in Oakland and also the inside looked like the Koffman Auditorium at Alameda High Schhool
This is a Dance called the Banga.  Apparently it is the women balancing pots on their heads after working in the field gathering food for the community (Left).  It is an interesting ritual to watch as at one point, one woman will balance all the pots (8) on her head at once (see Right)  Amazing!
This is a Dance for the Guys called Burong-Talo.  It uses fans and a alot of precision as some of the guys have to literally jump on the other guys shoulders.  Yea...That looked like it had to hurt a little if you know what I mean...I give it a 3000 on the 100 point difficulty scale...
Here is one of the performers in the Katipunan Modern Dance which was really good.  I give them props!!!
This Dance is called the Pangalay/Mangalay Dance...Looking at it, it is a very difficult dance to do.  The two people on the sticks have to balance themselves accordingly and also adjust to them moving as well!  While that is going on, women with sacarces and fans are dancing gracefully around them...WoW!!!
After the show, David and I met up with Joy's Family.  From Left to Right: Joy's Older Sister Leilani, Joy, David, Me, Joy's Older Brother Joey and Joy's Brother In Law Louie.
CONGRATULATIONS JOY!!! YOU DID GREAT!!!
