           Vlad  Dracula
a.k.a Vlad Tepes (the impaler)
Back
Vlad Dracula was born in the early 1400's. He was the son of Vlad Dracul, the ruler of Wallachia. They lived very close to Transylvania, a region in northern Romania that is nestled in the Carpathian Mountains. Vlad Dracul took the name Dracul, because it meant "devil" or "dragon" in Romanian. The son of Dracul was named Vlad Dracula, which meant "son of Dracul". Vlad Dracula took over the throne when his father died in a battle against the Turkish army. In a rage, Vlad Dracula led his kingdom with a "bloody hand", and engaged in many wars with the Turks. Vlad Dracula was only in power for six years, but was responsible for the deaths of thousands. He loved mass murders, and the ground around his castle was always red, because of blood. Vlad was known for his extremely brutal punishments, such as skinning, boiling, decapitating, blinding, strangling, hanging, burning, roasting, hacking, nailing,  stabbing, and burying (alive) his victims. After his death in 1476, strange happenings were blamed on his ghost. This is what probably started the idea of him being a vampire.
