Episode 3.01
A Whole New Ballgame

Written by Kasey M. Dunton

TEASER
(Day One.  We open from the Sports Night logo on Dan and Caseys office.  Both of them are sitting in office-type chairs and staring off into space.  Typical SN-esque music is playing.)

CASEY:
So.

Danny:
So.

Casey:
  Well.

Danny:
  Yes.

Casey:
I guess our problem wasnt related to Continental Corp being up for sale.

Danny:
Which problem?

Casey:
  Our lack of focus.

Danny:
  Ahh

Casey:
  Yes.

Danny:
THAT problem.

Casey:
  Yes.

Danny:
Because it couldve been, yknow, any problem from the long list.

Casey:
Yes.

Danny:
  Lots of problems.

Casey:
  A plethera.

Danny:
Yes.

Casey:
Or a myriad.

Danny:
Thats how Abby described it.

Casey:
  She did?

Danny:
She said I had a myriad of problems.

Casey:
She said that.

Danny:
Completely uncalled for.

Casey:
I was thinking she was right.

Danny:
  So lets review.

Casey:
Review what?

Danny:
The myriad of problems.

Casey:
Well (Pause)  Youre needy, insecure-

Danny:
  Not MY myriad of problems.

Casey:
  Oh.

Danny:
I know all of THOSE problems.

Casey:
Right.

Danny:
I meant OUR problems.  Like our focus problem.

Casey:
  Yes.

Danny:
Theres a meeting today.

Casey:
Ah, there are meetings every day.  Four of em.

Danny:
Not rundown meetings.  A meeting with the new head honcho.  The new big cheese.

Casey:
The guy who now owns us.

Danny:
  Thats what Im sayin.

Casey:
  So.

Danny:
Yes.

Casey:
Why cant we focus?

(Fade to commercial.  End of teaser.)

Act I
(Day One.  Open on the conference room.  Everyone is sitting around in their normal seats and looking relatively nervous.  Dana is fidgeting with the papers on her clipboard and twirling a pen between her first two fingers.)

Natalie:
So who is this guy?

Jeremy:
His names Calvin Treagor.

Natalie:
  Jeremy?

Jeremy:
  Yeah?

Natalie:
I know that.

Jeremy:
  And?

Natalie:
And I still dont know anything about him.

Dana:
Hes a semi-creepy guy until you know how he knows what he knows.

Natalie:
So the guy who owns us is a creep?

Dana:
  Not entirely.

Natalie:
Okay.

Dana:
I met him at Anthonys two nights before he bought us.  At first he creeped me out because          he knew who I was and about our fear of a Time-Warner takeover.  He predicted that Time-Warner would kick out at $27 a share and that MDI Transcom would come in as a bidderthen  he bought us.

Jeremy:
Hes the one who explained coaxial cable?

Dana:
Hes the one who explained coaxial cable, yes.

Casey:
  So hes not creepy.

Dana:
  Not so much.

Casey:
Got it.

(A silence.)

Dana:
(Quietly)  Where the hell is he?

(The door opens and Calvin walks in.  He holds in his hand a folder of papers and sits down in Isaacs chair, as Isaac is the only one not at the meeting.)

Calvin:
Hey, guys, sorry, Im a little behind schedule.

(All voice acceptances.)

Calvin:
(Cont.)  I got tied up in a meeting with the suits.  They were under the impression THEY were in charge.  Especially this one guy, Jim-Bob.

Dan:
  Jim-Bob?

Calvin:
Yeah.  Tall, dark, curly hair, glasses

Natalie:
J.J.?

Calvin:
Is that his name?  I thought it was Jim-Bob.  Anyway.  I realize you all have a show to do, so Ill try not to keep you too long.  Just a few quick things.  First is that I dont know what youve heard, but no ones job is in jeopardy.  Not yet.  But I will be keeping closer tabs on people, and if someone cant do the job, something might have to be done.  Secondly, these ratings could be higher.  Its a good show, there just arent enough people who know that.  Right now, Im looking to bring in a couple people for ratings and promotion.  (He thinks a moment.)  Anything you arent sure about, ask me, thank you, thats all.  Go do the show.  (He stands and walks out of the conference room.  Everyone just stares at the door, then back at each other.)

Danny:
Well, hes not your average netwitt, thats for sure.

Casey:
Yeah.

Natalie:
At least it sounds like hes keeping the position of Senior Associate.

Dana:
  Yeah.  On the other hand

Jeremy:
Sounds like Sam Donovan might be on his way back into town.

Dana:
Thats exactly what Im afraid of.

Danny:
Why?

Dana:
Why, what?

Danny:
Why are you so afraid of him coming back?

Dana:
Hehe just (Shes obviously fumbling for something to say.)  He takes control of everything.

Casey:
But he gets the ratings up.

Dana:
(Beat)  Right.

Danny:
So its good if he comes back.

Dana:
(Beat)  Yes. (Beat)  Okay.  Just umgo dowhatever youre supposed to be doing.

(Everyone except Natalie throws Dana an odd glance and leaves.  Natalie stars to leave, then stops in the doorway and turns back.)

Natalie:
Dana?

Dana:
(Staring down at her clipboard, but not really seeing it.)  What?

Natalie:
You know about punishment for not sharing, right?

Dana:
(Beat) Yeah.

Natalie:
And you know Im here if you want to talk, right?

Dana:
(Beat)  Yeah.

Natalie:
(Proddingly)  And?

Dana:
(Pause, sigh.)  In my office.  (She stands and takes Natalie by the arm, leading her gently through the newsroom.  Once they reach Danas office, she releases her grip and sits down in the chair behind her desk.  Natalie sits on the couch and waits for Dana to begin.)  So.  What were we talking about?

Natalie:
(Gently)  You and Sam.

Dana:
Right. (She pauses, then starts her story.)  Do you remember what happened the night you and Jeremy broke up other than you and Jeremy breaking up?

Natalie:
You mean Steve Sarris?

Dana:
Yeah, and how I was gone for most of the show?

Natalie:
(Stares at her, wide-eyed.)  You didnt.

Dana:
No, we didnt, but he was hitting on me he swore he wasnt, but he was.  We almost started something, but we both knew it would end in a week when he left.  So we agreed to keep it where it was.  But the night he leftI wanted him to stay.  I went into his office as he was packing his things, and I offered to get him a cake, figuring if he stayed for that, hed stay laterWe kissed, and II really thought hed stayand he left.  Without so much as a goodbye.

Natalie:
(Looking at her sympathetically.)  Why didnt you tell me any of this?

Dana:
You were busy getting over you and Jeremy.  The last thing you needed were my problems on top of it all.

Natalie:
(Quietly)  And now he might be coming back.

Dana:
Yeah.

Natalie:
And youre torn between loving him and hating him.

Dana:
  Yeah.

Natalie:
Theres a fine line.

Dana:
Right.

Natalie:
So you know what you do?

Dana:
What?

Natalie:
  Nothing.

Dana:
Nothing?

Natalie:
Yes.

Dana:
Isnt that what Im doing now?

Natalie:
Not exactly.

Dana:
Natalie-

Natalie:
Youre trying to make up your mind.

Dana:
So?

Natalie:
So what you need to do is wait until he comes back, then, believe it or not, follow Napoleons plan.  Engage the enemy, then you see.

Dana:
I thought it was

Natalie:
Literal translation, Dana.

Dana:
Ah.  Okay.

(Cut to:  Casey and Dans office, Day I  Dan is sitting at the table and staring at four small, torn-up pieces of paper.  Casey is at the computer desk and keeps glancing over.)

Casey:
(After a few moments.)  Oh, come on, Danny.  How much longer are you going to stare at it?

Danny:
I dont know.

Casey:
Because, yknow, if youre done with the important and time-consuming act of staring, theres a tiny, insignificant thing you should probably do.

Danny:
Really?  What is it?

Casey:
Well, I guess it would be called a script for our show, Danny.

Danny:
(Beat.)  Right.

Casey:
Just call her already, would you?

Danny:
I dont know if I should.

Casey:
Danny, you practically flew up to the Green Room to find her number.

Danny:
Yes.

Casey:
And when you found it was gone, you chased down the janitor to find where the trash can was.

Danny:
Yes.

Casey:
And then you dug through the garbage for nearly an hour to find her phone number.

Danny:
Yes.

Casey:
You know what you should do?

Danny:
(Innocently) What?

Casey:
CALL HER!

Danny:
Really?

Casey:
(Exasperated) YES!

Danny:
I cant.

Casey:
Why not?

Danny:
She might not still be there.

Casey:
If shes not, someone there might know where she is.

Danny:
True.

Casey:
So are you going to call her?

Danny:
Maybe.  (Casey raises an eyebrow at him.)  Okay, okay (He places the four pieces of paper together and picks up the phone, dials, then places his hand over the receiver.)  Its ringing.

Casey:
Good.

Danny:
(Listens a moment)  H-hello?  This is Dan Rydell, Im looking for Rebecca Wells(Pause)  Sure. (He turns over one of the scraps and scrawls down a phone number)  YesThank you.  Goodbye. (He hangs up.)

Casey:
And?

Danny:
Ive got her new number.

Casey:
So call it.

Danny:
I dont know if I should.

(Casey rolls his eyes and walks over to the phone.  Picking up the number, he dials it and hands the phone to Danny, who looks panicked.)

Danny:
(Quietly)  Remind me to kill you for thisHello?  Rebecca? (Pause)  Yeah, its meListen, what are you doing tomorrow night? (Pause)  Well, I was wonderingWould you like to go to dinner with me after my show? (Pause)  Okay, thenjust (Pause)  Sure, wait in the green room, my office, wherever.  You know the place well enough.  YeahIll see you thenBbye. (He hangs up.)

Casey:
  (Expectantly)  And?

Danny:
And were going to dinner after the show tomorrow night.

Casey:
  So I hear.

Danny:
Then why did you sit there and ask And?

Casey:
  How did she sound?

Danny:
How did she SOUND?

Casey:
  Yeah.

Danny:
Are you turning into Dana with her tone of voice thing?

Casey:
I am not.

Danny:
Then why did you ask?

Casey:
(Beat)  Because I did.

Danny:
Man, you have seriously been talking to Dana too much.  That or shes been talking to you too much.

Casey:
  What do you mean?

Danny:
Youre starting to say things I hear her say that she doesnt even realize

Casey:
Did you ever think I might not realize I say them?

Danny:
  Valid possibility.

Casey:
  Thanks.

Danny:
No problem.

(Night One.  We open on the newsroom before the show.  Jeremy and Natalie are walking together, and we get a feeling of dj vu.)

Jeremy:
Well, Ive heard the rumor.

Natalie:
  Me too.

Jeremy:
Thats two.

(They pass Kim and Elliot)

Natalie:
Two people we know whove heard the rumor.

Elliot:
You guys have heard the rumors?

Kim:
Weve heard em too.

Jeremy:
  Thats four.

Natalie:
RumorS, plural?  This is worse than we thought!

(They go into the control room.  Dave, Chris, and Will are in there, Dan and Casey can be seen on the monitors putting on their mikes and getting ready for the show.)

Dave:
  Two minutes to VTR.

Chris:
Three minutes live.

Natalie:
Hey, guys, have you heard the rumors?

Dave:
  Yep.

Will:
  Mmhmm.

Chris:
Yeah.

Natalie:
Seven! (into the mike)  Dan, Casey-

Dan:
(Deadpan.) Yes, weve heard the rumors.

Jeremy:
  Nine.

(Dana walks in.)

Dana:
Whats the drop-dead time on Denver?

Natalie:
  Twenty seconds.

Dana:
(Into headset)  Kelly, thats twenty seconds for fifty cold.

Natalie:
  Have you heard the rumors?

Dana:
Which one?  The one about Calvin wanting to buy out Isaacs contract, the one about Sam definitely coming back, or the one which combines them both and says Sam is taking over as managing editor?

Natalie:
  Are they true?

Dana:
  No.

Natalie:
Youre sure.

Dana:
  Yes.

Natalie:
Nine people have heard the rumor.

Dana:
Nine people are wrong.  (She stops what shes doing and tilts her head in thought.)

Natalie:
  What?

Dana:
Nothing.  I just had the strangest sense of dj vu. (She snaps out of her trance-like state)  Dave, show me San Diego.

Dave:
San Diegos up.  Roll VTR, live in 60.

Jeremy:
Good show.

Dana:
Good show, everyone.

Natalie:
  Jeremy, do the count again.

Dana:
  Guys-

Jeremy:
Me and Natalie-

Dana:
Natalie and I

Jeremy:
  Thats two.

Dana:
  I know.

Jeremy:
Kim and Elliot, thats four.

Dana:
  Jeremy-

Jeremy:
Dave, Chris, and Will.

Dana:
Let me guess thats seven!

Jeremy:
Yeah.  Plus Dan and Casey make nine.

Dana:
  And Im ten.

Jeremy:
  (Beat.)  Yes.

Dana:
So TEN people have heard the rumor, not nine.

Jeremy:
  Right.

Dana:
  Okay.

(Isaac limps slowly into the control room and stands behind Dana and Jeremy.)

Isaac:
Good evening, how are you all?

Dana:
  Isaac Jaffees in the house.

Isaac:
Been a long time since youve said that.

Dana:
  Yeah.  You should treasure it.

Isaac:
  Okay

Natalie:
Isaac, have you heard the rumors?

Isaac:
Of course I have.  Everyone who works at this station has heard some sort of rumor.

Jeremy:
  Are any of them true?

Isaac:
Not that I know of. Im meeting with Calvin tomorrow.

(Dana, Natalie, and Jeremy exchange an uh-oh glance)

Dave:
  In 32

(Cut to studio.)

Casey:
Good evening, from New York City, Im Casey McCall alongside Dan Rydell, those stories plus a battle of the birds in Baltimore, a battle of the Sox in Beantown, and a battle of the basemen for the Braves.

Dan:
Well show you diving catches and diving competition.  All that coming up after this, youre watching Sports Night on CSC, so stick around.

Dave:
Were out.

(Fade to commercial.  End Act I.)

Act II
(Day 2.  Isaac is sitting at his desk and working.  Calvin Tregor knocks on the frame of the open door.)

Isaac:
(Not looking up.)  Come in.

Calvin:
(Enters, then closes the door behind him.)  Isaac, do you have a few minutes?

Isaac:
(He looks up and eyes the closed door, slightly nervously.)  Sure.

Calvin:
I know everyones heard theories that this meeting is to relieve you of your duties.  It isnt that at all.

Isaac:
  Well, thats good to know.

Calvin:
Yeah.  But I was thinking maybe of bringing in someone to be an assistant managing editor.  It came up at the meeting with the suits yesterday about the ratings guy who was here last year.

Isaac:
  Sam Donovan.

Calvin:
Right.  J.J.  said they offered him your job, that he couldve done it, but he was loyal to you.  So I thought maybe that would be an option.

Isaac:
Yeah.  Hes good at what he does.

Calvin:
So you know, this wouldnt have to change any of what you do.  But if you want to work fewer hours, not work quite as hardPlus hed be doing what he did before with the ratings.

Isaac:
  Okay.

Calvin:
Well, then. (Checks his watch.)  Ive got a lunch with finance.  (He starts to leave, then turns back.)  Oh, by the way.  Have you ever found a way that Dana wont tell the entire staff something as soon as she leaves the room?

Isaac:
(Chuckling.)  Only to not tell her in the first place.

Calvin:
(Smiles.)  Thats what I thought.  (He leaves.)

(Night 2.  Cut to a broadcast near its end.)

Danny:
(OTA.)  Thats all for us, but dont worry, well be back tomorrow, same bat time, same bat channel.  Im Dan Rydell alongside Casey McCall, youve been watching Sports Night on CSC, so stick around.

Casey:
  (OTA.)  Gnight.

(Cut to Control Room.)

Chris:
Music.

Will:
  Go.

Chris:
Animation.

Will:
  Go.

Chris:
Roll Credits.

Will:
  Go.

Dave:
Were out.

Dana:
Nice show, everyone.  Ill be at Anthonys if anyone wants to join me.

(She leaves.  Natalie looks after Dana with a gleam in her eye and walks casually out of the control room into the studio. She practically tackles Casey, who is standing at the anchor desk, taking off his mike and earpiece.)

Natalie:
What are you doing right now?

Casey:
  Im going-

Natalie:
Youre going to Anthonys with Dana.

Casey:
I am?

Natalie:
Yes.

Casey:
Why?

Natalie:
Because.

Casey:
Because why?

Natalie:
She said If anyone wants to join me.

Casey:
  So?

Natalie:
So she was signaling you.

Casey:
She was signaling me?

Natalie:
  She was.

Casey:
Natalie, I put up with you forcing me and Dana together for over a year.  I finally made my move, but I never even got to go out with her because of her ridiculous six-month plan.

Natalie:
Yeah.  So?

Casey:
So Im going home.  (He walks away, but Natalie catches up to him.)  Leave it be, Nat.

Natalie:
Casey, Sams getting back in tomorrow before the show.

Casey:
  (Beat.)  So?

Natalie:
SO Danas upset and confused.  Shes probably over there crying in her martini right now.

Casey:
  Is she?

Natalie:
Quite possibly.

Casey:
Natalie-

Natalie:
She wants you to be near her, she was just too embarrassed to ask you specifically.  So she signaled you.  But she knew it would go over your head, so she made sure it was a signal Id catch.

Casey:
  Elaborate plan.

Natalie:
  Yeah.

Casey:
Ill go.  But if youre making it up-

Natalie:
Why would I do that?  (He raises an eyebrow.)  Just go.

Casey:
Okay.  (He heads off in the direction of his office, Natalie keeps walking as well, but towards the exit.)

(Cut to: Night 2, INT Tony Anthonys.  Danas sitting alone at a table in the corner, staring off into space.  Jeremy and Natalie are at another table.  Casey walks in and gets a beer at the bar, hesitates, then walks over to Danas table.)

Casey:
Dana?  (No response.)  Dana?

Dana:
(Looking at him.)  Oh, hey, Casey.  I was just, um

Casey:
(Sits across from her.)  Youre worried about Sam coming back tomorrow night.

Dana:
(Quietly.)  Yeah.

Casey:
And so youre sitting alone and drinking as you worry.

Dana:
  (Smiling slightly.)  Yeah.

Casey:
(Pauses, then starts to talk, sounding slightly nervous.)  Hey, Dana, I was wondering if

Dana:
(Looking past him.)  Is that Dan walking in with his arm around Rebecca?

Casey:
  (Looks over his shoulder.)  Yeah.

Dana:
Im sorry, what were you saying?

Casey:
  Nothing.

Dana:
Really?

Casey:
Yeah.  Dont worry about it.

Dana:
Okay (Sips her martini.)

(Cut to Dan and Rebeccas table across the restaurant.)

Danny:
You look nice tonight.

Rebecca:
  Thank you.

Danny:
Youre charming and funny

Rebecca:
  Thank you.

Danny:
(Pause.)  I missed you.

Rebecca:
  No you didnt.

Danny:
  I did.

Rebecca:
Why?

Danny:
What do you mean, why?

Rebecca:
You shouldnt.

Danny:
What?  Why not?  I mean, okay, you went back to him, but hey, you did what you had to do

Rebecca:
No.

Danny:
No?

Rebecca:
IIm disobedient and ugly and stupid and-

Danny:
Rebecca.

Rebecca:
(Continuing.)  -selfish and a bitch and I-

Danny:
(He grabs her hand which was sitting on the table and holds it gently in his own.)  Rebecca.  (She is silenced.)  Listen.  I dont know what that womanizing ex-husband of yours did to your confidence, but I do know this.  You are none of the things you just said you were.  And I will do whatever it takes for you to see that.

Rebecca:
  (Quietly.)  For you are Dan?

Danny:
For I am.

Rebecca:
Doer of good things where women are concerned.

Danny:
Yeah.

Rebecca:
(Even quieter.)  I missed you too.

(Cut to Jeremy and Natalies table.)

Jeremy:
So.

Natalie:
Yeah.

Jeremy:
How much convincing did you have to do to get Casey over with Dana?

Natalie:
  (Smiles.)  A fair amount.

Jeremy:
  You would think.

Natalie:
  Yeah.

(An uncomfortable silence.)

Natalie:
Jeremy, where are we?

Jeremy:
Where are we?

Natalie:
  Yeah.

Jeremy:
  Were at Anthonys

Natalie:
Thats not what I meant.

Jeremy:
We are!

Natalie:
  I know that.

Jeremy:
Then why did you ask?

Natalie:
(Slightly exasperated.)  Were not really broken up, were not really back togetherwhere are we?

Jeremy:
(Shrugs.)  I dont know, I was hoping you would.

Natalie:
Jeremy-

Jeremy:
What do you want from me?

Natalie:
  I dont know.  (Sigh.)

(Another silence.)

Jeremy:
  So.

Natalie:
Yeah.

(Cut to Day 3.  Caseys in his office and Dan walks in.)

Casey:
Hey, Danny.

Danny:
(Tired-sounding.)  Hey.

Casey:
  Out late last night?

Danny:
  Yeah.

Casey:
Gather it went well?

Danny:
(Pause.)  (Quietly.)  Im gonna kill that son of a bitch.

Casey:
  Rebecca?

Danny:
Steve.

Casey:
Okay.

Danny:
He did something to her mind, Casey.  She thinks shes a horrible person or something now.  I took a swig of my beer and she cowered.  I mean, that is seriously not like her.  I justI want to be able to make it up to her for everything Steve did, but she wont trust me.

Casey:
I thought she seemed fine when she was here.

Danny:
  Yeah, so did I.

(Silence.)

Casey:
But you know what, man?  If anyone can get her back to normal, its you.

Danny:
Yeahthanks (He looks distant in thought.)

(Cut to Night 3, the control room before the show.  Everyones in Show mode, but Dana looks distracted.)

Kim:
(Over speaker.)  Five minutes to air, first team to the studio please.

Dave:
Sports Nights at Ready One.

Master Control:
(Over speaker.)  This is Master Control, youre up on Router 17 tonight, have a good show.

Dana:
  Thank you.

Dave:
Stand by audio, stand by VTR.

Natalie:
  Show me 12 and 12B.

Will:
  Not 12A?

Natalie:
Nope, just 12 and 12B.

Will:
(Muttering.)  That wasnt nearly as persnickety as Dana.

Dana:
I heard that!

Jeremy:
  Its true.

Dana:
Stay quiet!  (To tech. Guys.)  Let me hear Milwaukee.

Chris:
  Youve got Milwaukee.

Dana:
Thank you.

Dave:
Two minutes to VTR, Three minutes live.

(Dan and Casey enter the control room.)

Dana:
Well, well, well.  Look who decided to show up!  And thats good because theres three minutes until you guys are going to be live in front of three million viewers, give or take a couple.

Casey:
(Under his breath, to Natalie.)  Can you give her that test to see if shes edgy?

Natalie:
Stay quiet!

Dana:
(Looking appreciatively at Natalie.)  Thank you!  (To Dan and Casey.)  Dont you have, like, I dont know, a SHOW to do?

Danny:
Yeah.

Casey:
So?

(Dana shoots them a Look.)

Danny:
Okay, okay, were going, were going

Dave:
  Roll VTR, 60 seconds live.

(Dan and Casey go into the studio.  We follow them.)

Danny:
Youre telling me its SAM thats making her this edgy?

Casey:
Yeah.

Danny:
Man, we are gonna be facing her wrath for quite a while.

(They put on their mikes and earpieces and sit down.)

Casey:
Yeah, Ill say.

Dave:
(Over speaker.)  In 321

Casey:
(OTA.)  Good evening, from New York City, Im Casey McCall alongside Dan Rydell, those stories plus

(Cut back to the control room.  We continue to hear and see Casey on the monitor.  The control room door opens and Sam Donovan walks in.

Sam:
Hey, everyone.  Im back.

Everyone (Except Dana):
  (Adlibs.)  Hey, Sam/Welcome back/etc.

(We close up on Dana.  She looks slightly panicked as Sam smiles at her.)

Danny:
(On monitor, we only hear his voice as we continue to see Dana.)  Youre watching Sports Night on CSC, so stick around.

(FADE TO BLACK.  END ACT II.)
