i felt a soft shadow pass
blacker than black, a shadow's shadow
borne upon a mist of green
among the hissing poplar leaves
i remembered its name
and then made myself forget

firmly locked in place, i lay quaking
waiting for the expected
catching sky diamonds between blinks
tossed upon chilling waves of night
i heard the bobcat mating scream
but the gentle rabbit slept
and i lay trying not to breathe
listening for the return
knowing it would come
like a long forgotten memory
in its own good time

and when it came
it came like a whisper
it came like a river
it came like a storm
it came for me
