can you see how the flickering light
of infinite candlesticks
sends shadows cavorting
from corner to ceiling to...
to those marks on the floor

did you notice the locks
all the locks on the door
did you see how the window
the one
tiny
window
is sealed with plank and spike

did they grant you the time
for a glance
at those walls
they so casually leaned upon
in that moment before
they shut the door
and you understood
what the locks were for



and when you are gone
and another has taken your place
do you think they will notice
all the fresh marks
in that filthy grey plaster
or the tiny nail fragments
embedded there
