Character Information

Name: Rhona Innes Fraser

Age and Birthdate: 17, soon to be 18 (October 30, 1276)

Sex: Female

Blood: Pureblood

Wand: Yew, 11 1/3 inches, dragon heart-string (from a Hebridean Black)

Place of Birth: Oliver Castle, near Tweeddale in East Lothian, Scotland

Physical Appearance: Standing at 5’ 8” and weighing roughly 125 lbs, Rhona is slightly taller than average, though not quite enough to be considered tall. With a build that is more lean than willowy, Rhona has a rather boyish figure. While most girls would loath being bestowed with narrow hips and a mostly flat chest, Rhona doesn’t mind so much. This is mostly due to the fact that Rhona’s a bit of a tomboy. Her lean body is lightly muscled and though Rhona doesn’t really have to do anything to keep her body trim. She simply has a high metabolism.

Rhona’s lightly tan complexion is dusted with freckles. Some of the more noble born girls would scold her ferociously for allowing her complexion to darken, but Rhona loves the sunlight too much to care about trying to keep her skin pale. Besides, Rhona believes that a little sun never hurt anyone. And while Rhona didn’t inherit her mother’s red hair, she did inherit her mother’s freckles. During the summer Rhona’s freckles spread from around her nose to any part of her skin that exposed to the sun. And while Rhona rather likes the freckles that cross her nose and cheeks, she’s still a little undecided about whether she likes the freckles elsewhere.

Instead of inheriting her mother’s bright red tresses, Rhona inherited her father’s earthy brown locks. A somewhat plain and drab medium brown, Rhona’s mane of hair falls to her waist. Not to thick and not too thin, her hair is straight for the most part, but as it nears her waist, Rhona’s hair takes on a bit of a wave. Generally Rhona will wear her hair down, unless she has Potions or some other equally busy class where she needs her hair up and out of the way.

However, Rhona did inherit her mother’s eyes. Warm but calculating, Rhona’s brown eyes peer at the world from beneath trim and shapely eyebrows. While many people are unable to control the expression shown in their eyes, Rhona can. If Rhona wants someone to think she’s happy, she can extend that mask to her eyes. There’s only one flaw in Rhona’s mask, she can’t lie effectively. Her right eye will always twitch a little if she lies. Though it’s a somewhat difficult tic to overcome, Rhona is attempting to rid herself of the twitch as she feels it would be an undesirable trait should she become an Auror as she wishes.

Rhona is all about function when it comes to how she dresses. She thinks the long gowns her mother and aunts were are perfectly ridiculous. Unfortunately, when Rhona’s not at Hogwarts she’s required to wear such attire as well. From this she’s developed her somewhat sweeping walk, which isn’t really necessary with her Hogwarts uniform. At first some of the lower-born girls made fun of this, until they saw her wearing a dress that trailed a foot on the ground without using her hands to lift her skirt out of the way.

While at Hogwarts Rhona usually wears a bliaut of her primary house color with a black vest and black corset trimmed with her secondary house color. In the colder months these are made of wool and in the warmer months they’re made of linen. When she ventures outside Rhona will usually wear a veil, though when she’s inside it’s almost a fire-hazard. And on her feet Rhona sports soft leather leace-up short boots. (dressboots)

Rhona owns very little in the way of jewelry. But it is rare to see her not wearing the ring her parents gave her for her 17th birthday. The delicate gold band is topped with a five petaled flower with a single round opal in the center.

Personality: From her youth Rhona has been known for her willpower. Indomitable will her mother calls it, bull-headed stubbornness her father calls it. Either way, once Rhona figures out what she wants and how she's going to get it, she goes after it and few people have hope of stopping her once she has her mind set on something. Rhona's not the sort to go after fickle things though. Though ambitious, Rhona is an idealistic individual and tries to find meaning in everything she does. Not just any meaning though. Chasing flights of fancy is not her style. Rhona searches for meanings that benefit people in a good way, or protect something or something unable to protect itself. Everything Rhona is interested in, whether class work or Golden Snidget protection or her plans to become and auror, is filled with passion. Once Rhona finds something she can believe in strongly, she throws herself into it whole heartedly with courage and a zealous drive; and she won't let anyone deter her.

Of course, this is one of Rhona's downfalls at the same time. Sometimes, she can become a little... obsessive. Rhona doesn't really know the meaning of the word "moderation." Some of her friends are of the idea she takes her school work to a point far beyond serious. While Rhona knows better than to expect perfection from the people around her, she does expect it from herself. And when she fails to achieve less than perfection, she can take it a bit hard. Over the last few years Rhona's begun to deal better with this. However Rhona also doesn't deal too well with people doing better than her in what she thinks of as one of her fortes, like Defense. If another classmate manages to cast a spell before she can, anticipate Rhona becoming a little jealous. Rather than lashing out at the person, expect Rhona to go back to her dorm and practice the spell until she can cast it upside-down and backwards by the next morning. A bit competitive? Quite. And while some people are put off by this, it's not a trait Rhona is about to get rid of. She wants to be an auror, and Rhona feels that being a bit competitive will give her an edge during training.

This isn't to say that Rhona won't help anyone. By far no. Despite her competitive streak, Rhona is a very charismatic person, almost magnetically so. She's highly concerned about other people, one reason she wants to become an auror. Rhona is a natural leader. When situations arise, it's Rhona that keeps her head on straight and starts issuing directions. And people usually listen. Maybe it's her boundless energy. Even after knowing her for years, some of her friends are still surprised Rhona's able to almost leap from her bed and keep going until late at night. It's energizing to be around people like that, though a little unnerving at the same time. Or perhaps it's that Rhona is a rather emotionally deep person. She has to be, to feel such passion for the things she believes in. However, that emotional depth extends to trying to understand and sympathize with those around her as well. A friend with a problem is about the only thing that can get Rhona to stop her daily frenzied pace. And once her friends realize that, they've found a source of observant wisdom.

Some individuals that are driven like Rhona tend to focus just on themselves. While Rhona has managed to escape the overly selfish tendencies that befall some ambitious persons, that isn't to say she isn't selfish to some degree. Instinctually, Rhona would prefer to spend all her time devoted to her projects and schoolwork. Luckily her curiosity balances this trait. Rhona wants to know. She wants to know what's going on around her and in the world. She wants to know what makes the people around her tick. Unfortunately, this is caused somewhat by Rhona's cynical attitude. Rhona entirely trusts her friends and family and wouldn't question their motives. Professors receive deferment because of experience and habitual respect on Rhona's part. But Rhona does sometime question the motives of her fellow students. After having one too many peers cajole and flatter her repeatedly in hopes of borrowing notes, Rhona developed a healthy lack of confidence for her fellow humans. Rhona's open-minded enough that she'll give an individual a fair chance to earn her trust. But when someone repeatedly exhibits disapproved traits, or worse, when someone betrays her trust, Rhona is extremely hesitant to grant, or re-grant, her trust in the person.

Strongest Subject: Rhona’s Fraser flare is in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Spells useful in dueling, spells of protection, spells of defense. This is mostly fueled by Rhona’s desire to become an Auror after she graduates.

Weakest Subject: Rhona cannot stand Herbology and was glad to drop the class the first chance she could. Plants are simply not her forte. Especially plants that like to bite.

History: The Fraser clan is a very unusual wizarding family. By nature, compared to other pureblooded wizarding families, they're simply plagued by squib births. It's not that they've married into themselves too much, in fact, they're rather careful about that. But roughly one in five of the children born each generation are born squibs. It's rather disheartening for the clan, but of the other wizarding families, the Frasers are probably the most understanding of squibs because of this high birth-rate. The squibs within the clan aren't denied any of the rights a magical has and the other clan members don't shun them at all.

In fact, the Fraser clan has a secret about its squibs. They've found the children that have a squib parent often have a special flare in some area of magic. Whether the flare is in potions, or transfiguration, or charms, the flare happens in about 75% of the children with a Squib parent. And the children that are born to two Squib parents? The flare is even greater, or occurs in two areas of magic. This doesn't happen often though. Only 25% of the children born to two Squibs have this extra flare. So the Frasers are careful to arrange marriages for squib-born children once their lack of magic is realized. In the Fraser clan, the eleventh birthday either means a Hogwarts letter or a betrothal.

The Frasers also have another reason for treating their squibs well; the Fraser squibs make up the front of the Fraser clan that the muggles see. Most of the Frasers throughout muggle history have been from the squib front that the magical portion of the clan puts up. Because of this, the Fraser clan has the lowest rate of accidental muggle revelation, or muggles finding out they’re not quite what they seem.

Simon Fraser, Rhona’s father, was born to Ewan Fraser and Saundra Keith in the Fraser ancestral castle near Tweeddale in East Lothian, Scotland. Oliver Castle is the base of the squib front for the Fraser clan. Ewan wasn’t a squib, but his mother had been, and his Fraser flare was Transfiguration, and like most of the Frasers that have had Transfiguration flares, he was an animagus. His form was that of an osprey. Saundra was from the main branch of the Keith clan, another clan living in East Lothian and one the Fraser clan has close ties with. Ewan and Saundra met while they were attending Hogwarts. Ewan was a Ravenclaw and Saundra was a Gryffindor. Ewan needed help with charms and Saundra needed help with Transfiguration, and after a few years of being study buddies the two started dating. After graduating Ewan and Saundra were wed and moved into Oliver castle with Ewan’s parents.

A few years later Simon was born. While Ewan knew his family was saturated with squibs he hadn’t quite expected his own son to be one. At first he was a little disappointed, but he loved his son. Ewan and Saundra would have liked more children, but despite trying as hard as possible, they only had Simon. When Simon’s birthday came and went with no Howarts’ letter, Ewan arranged a marriage for Simon with the daughter of one of his business partners.

Brigit MacFusty was born to Blair MacFusty and Aileen MacLeod in the Stornoway Castle on the Hebrides Islands. Blair ran the account books of his family’s dragon reserve for his father and his wife Aileen was one of the healers on the reserve. The two had attending Hogwarts only two years apart but never really crossed paths. Blair had a circle of Gryffindor friends just as crazy about dragons as he was and Aileen was a soft spoken Hufflpuff. After getting her healer certification Aileen found a job at the MacFusty Dragon reserve in the Outer Hebrides. Suffice to say, it didn’t take long for Blair to finally notice the pretty healer and even shorter for him to land in her infirmary with a burn. Aileen was rather smitten after three such visits and the two were married in the summer.

Brigit was the last of four children born to Blair and Aileen. Boyd and Bruce were identical twin terrors that kept their parents and the rest of the reserve on their toes. They became dragon keepers like their father and helped out on the reserve after graduating from Hogwarts. Robert was more interested in dragon research and also came back to the reserve after he graduated. Brigit however never really developed the love her brothers and father had for dragons. Instead she wanted to be a healer like her mother, though she didn’t want to treat dragon injuries. She’d seen enough of those for a lifetime by the time she was eleven.

When Ewan announced that he’d received a marriage proposal for Brigit, she was a little scared at first, but when the two children were introduced the summer before she went to Hogwarts, Brigit found Simon to be a rather nice boy. So Brigit went off to Hogwarts and was sorted into Gryffindor while Simon spent the next seven years being educated in magical theory, business and various muggle things he would need to know to help with the Fraser squib front. Equestrian he already knew from his childhood, as well as fencing, but he needed to learn muggle diplomacy and customs. After graduating from Hogwarts, Brigit was married to Simon and moved into Oliver Castle before going on to study healing.

It wasn’t long after Brigit earned her healing certification that she found she was pregnant. The young couple was ecstatic. But joy turned to pain when Brigit miscarried. For a few years they thought they’d never actually have any children or just keep miscarrying. But then Rhona was born. Simon and Brigit worried for a while that she might be a squib, but when she was two Rhona did her first magic, a combination of a floating charm and a summoning charm on her stuffed bear that was across the room.

As a child, Rhona quickly discovered she loved the outdoors. By the time she was six she was notorious for escaping from her nursemaids and scampering around outside in the sun. Many a tunic was ruined from climbing trees and riding horses. Rhona wasn’t a complete hooligan though. She was quick to pick up on the idea of right and wrong and displayed a remarkable aptitude for quick decision making for one her age. When one of her cousins feel into the lake, seven year old Rhona levelheadedly sent one of her other cousins for help then managed to get a piece of limb that had recently blown down over to her floundering playmate.

Besides her love for outdoors and level-headedness, Rhona also became well known within her family for her stubbornness. If Rhona wasn’t presented with a good reason to do something she didn’t want to do, it was quite difficult to convince her otherwise. While Rhona never really crossed the line into being a spoiled brat, as she rarely demanded anything of her parents, Rhona was an extremely willful child. She wanted to know the reason behind everything she was instructed to do. And once Simon and Brigit saw the advantages there were to such and outlook, they were all too happy to explain things to their daughter. It took them a while to explain embroidery to Rhona but she eventually relented.

By the time she was ten, Rhona was a marginally decent cook, having quickly picked up on the usefulness of that skill. The castle cook took a liking to the girl and bestowed on Rhona a few useful tricks. Hoping Rhona’s cooking talent would branch into potions, Brigit started having Rhona help her with a few healing potions. It soon became apparent that while Rhona would be reasonably competent in making potions, she wasn’t particularly talented in it like Brigit was.

When she received her Hogwarts letter the summer after she turned eleven, Rhona was elated. She’d been excited about Hogwarts since childhood. After watching cousin after cousin head off to Hogwarts, it was finally her turn. After a shopping trip in Diagon Alley for her wand and other school things, the time soon came for Rhona to travel to Hogwartrs. Her parents accompanied her as she traveled by Floo powder to Hogsmeade and took the carriage to Hogwarts. They stayed to watch the Sorting, then Apparated home to Oliver Castle.

At first Rhona was a little scared to be so far from home, but she quickly made friends in her new house and classes. It wasn’t long before Rhona discovered what her Fraser Flare was in, Defense Against the Dark Arts. Learning the material just seemed natural and the spells came easily. The concept of protecting someone else was one that Rhona found she rather liked. Her parents had taught her to respect law enforcement, and Rhona began to play with the idea of becoming such a person.

In her second year Rhona joined the dueling club. She loved it. By the end of the year she was able to out duel all the other second years and a few of the third. By the end of her third year she could out duel half of the fourth years. By her fourth year she was on par with the best of the fifth years. By the end of her fifth year she could best some of the seventh years. And by the end of her sixth year there were only a couple seventh years still better than her.

During the summer between her third and fourth years, Rhona met a very interesting individual, Madam Modesty Rabnott, an old school mate of her grandmother. Modesty was the one that introduced Rhona to the Golden Snidgit and the danger the small bird was in. While Rhona loved watching Quidditch, she too hated the way the Snidget was treated. She joined Modesty in her campaign against using the Snidget in Quidditch and is quite outspoken about the subject at school.

It was during the summer between her fourth and fifth year that Rhona made the decision she wanted to become an auror. Someone had been playing cruel tricks on the muggles and wizards in East Lothian and Rhona’s parents had been unable to discover who it was. The wizards council had been informed and an auror had come to find the perpetrator. It had turned out to be one of the footmen whose younger sister had been caught by some muggles and burned at the stake. His sister’s death had driven him quite mad and he had taking it out on the muggles. However, he began to have trouble distinguishing between muggles and wizards and had ended up attacking some wizards as well. The whole affair culminated in a blazing duel between the auror and the footman, with the footman loosing. While Rhona could sympathize with the footman, she was more awed by the auror. It was then that Rhona resolved to become and auror.

Rhona was appointed a prefect her fifth year, a privilege and responsibility she’d been hoping to earn. Rhona spent a good deal of the year studying, performing her prefect duties, researching and teaching herself spells for the dealing club, and preparing for her OWLs. Rhona nearly studied herself to a state of exhaustion preparing for the OWLs. Her friends finally made her take a rest before she worried herself to death. In the end she did quite well, earning Os in all the classes she needed them in and Es and As in everything else.

Rhona was prefect once again during her sixth year as she began taking her NEWT classes. Transfiguration, Charms, Potions, Care of Magical Creatures and of course Defense Against the Dark Arts. Between classes, prefect duties and dueling club, Rhona barely had time for anything else; though she made sure she had her school work done so she could enjoy Hogsmeade weekends. Since she had a fall birthday, Rhona was able to take her Apparation test over the Christmas break. She passed. Now considered an adult, she was free to use her magic how and when she wanted and go where she wanted without having to use Floo Powder.

Now Rhona has entered her seventh and final year of Hogwarts. Only one more school year stands between her and the possibility of auror training, and Rhona intends to make the very best of it.
