Appearance: At 5' 6" and 52 kg (115 lbs), Jovanna is as slim and wiry as she was in her youth, quidditch and training having made her tougher than she looks. Though her height leaves her shorter than most of her older students, she makes up for it with a certain glare that makes it seem like she's the taller one. Her long, silvery hair is kept is a neat braid that reaches her waist. Jovanna's eyes are her only distinctive feature. Framed by long lashes and set in a heart-shaped face with a pale complexion, they are a startling bright green. They are pensive, yet are bright and lively, even at her age. But when she's angry, they turn a pale green, then gold. Jovanna resembles her mother in physical appearance but takes after her father in mannerism, from the slightly cocky angle of her head to the half smile on her lips. A conservative dresser, Jovanna favors reds and golds as they accent her eyes, and pretty much sticks to robes. Around her neck, she always wears a large teardrop shaped moonstone pendant that had been passed down through her mother's family, and at her waist, hidden in her robes, a small dagger, which is really her father's transfigured sword.
Personality: Extremely stubborn, Jovanna will argue her point to hell and back before she lets the other person win. She is capable of getting along with most everybody, but she does what she thinks is best for the school, even if what's she'd doing doesn't coincide with what the Wizard's Council wants. Quick-witted and somewhat cynical, her volatile but rare temper is legendary among the students (although the story has been quite exaggerated and tweaked over the years). Beneath her face of the stern professor, Jovanna has a deeper side that few are familiar with and is very understanding of her students and cares greatly for their well-being. Buried under her role as Headmistress is her fun-loving and mischievous side. While she'll punish prankers, she does appreciate a good joke as her own taste for fun and adventure sometimes got her in trouble when she was in school. Jovanna isn't Headmistress for nothing. Her knowledge and wisdom is extensive and covers diverse subjects. Because her student's lives are in her charge, Jovanna only confides in those who have earned her trust. She will go to any lengths to protect her students, and if it means trading her life for even one of theirs, she'll do it in a heartbeat.
History: Jovanna's mother, Sabine, was born to Morgance and Patrick Caliburne in Orenda Flat, a small wizarding community just outside Glasgow, Scotland. Her mother disappeared when Sabine was three and was believed to be dead. Patrick was an auror and worked in the Magical Law Enforcement, though his passion was Potions. Sabine longed to follow in her father's footsteps and become an auror too. When she was six years old, Sabine discovered she had the healing gift. Starting then, she began to work to develop it to its fullest. She was sent to a special (private) preparatory magic school in Glasgow that dealt specifically with healers. But every break Sabine went back to Orenda to visit her father. She left the Sirona School of Healing when she was 11 so she could attend Hogwarts. Sabine found she had her father's gift for potions and it was her second favorite class, after Defense Against the Dark Arts. At Hogwarts, Sabine became friends with Kidagakash Nedakh and Darrian Jatal, who also wanted to become aurors, and the three were fast friends all the way through school. Sabine passed her ability as a healer on to her daughter.
Born to Gwyneth and Devlin Jatal in Manchester, England, Jovanna's father, Darrian, was the oldest child of four. But Darrian was muggleborn and the only wizard in his family. He was thoroughly surprised when he received his Hogwarts letter, but it certainly explained a lot of things. Like the time the neighbor's viscous dog turned into a rock. It reappeared as a dog the next day, but was quite docile from then on. Before going to Hogwarts, Darrian did some reading up on the wizarding world and was quite interested in aurors. Darrian found he had quite a talent for transfiguration and charms, though in his free time he liked borrowing books from the library and learning various jinks, hexes and curses. At Hogwarts, Darrian became friends with Kidagakash Nedakh and Sabine Caliburne, who also wanted to become aurors, and the three were fast friends all the way through school. Darrian's family were some of the victims during the Dark Lord's rise in power. Their deaths further grounded Darrian in his desire to become an auror. In Darrian's family, there were stories about an ancestor that would set things on fire when angry. What they didn't know was that this ancestor was a wizard and a pyrokentic. Darrian inherited his ancestor's pyrokinesis and worked secretly to learn how to control it. He passed this ability on to his daughter.
The only daughter, and child, of Adon Kashekim of Nyoko Lake, Jovanna's godmother, Kida, had always wanted to be an auror like her mother. But her father was dead set against it. "You'll get yourself killed," he said. Because Kida's mother died when she was very young, she wasn't really raised quite to be a "lady." She was more commonly found playing with her boy cousins than doing girly stuff like cooking, sewing or playing house. In an attempt to teach her discipline, Kashekim had Kida instructed in the martial arts, then weaponry. But this only fueled her burning desire to be an auror, as these abilities would be useful in that line of profession. When Kida was eleven, Kashekim gladly sent her halfway around the world to Hogwarts, in hopes that someone there could straighten her out. At Hogwarts, Kida became friends with Sabine Caliburne and Darrian Jatal, who also wanted to become aurors, and the three were fast friends all the way through school. Kida was a Seer and had a "knack" for knowing when her friends, and later her goddaughter, were in trouble, mischief, etc. Kida was one of the few true Seers in Britain, though she wasn't from Britain. A crystal necklace she always wore had some healing attributes but it was only strong enough for minor injuries.
Sabine and Darrian fell in love during their seventh year and were married right out of Hogwarts. Kida was maid-of-honor at Sabine and Darrian's wedding and later became godmother to their daughter. After graduating, Kida returned home to ask her father one more time if she could become an auror. Kashekim still refused, but Kida persisted and Kashekim finally gave Kida permission to apply to the academy. The three enrolled in the Aurors academy and were accepted. A year later they graduated, at the top of their class. Right away, they were sent out. Within her first year, Kida captured four death eaters, which is pretty good considering how hard it is to find them. But then, two years after graduating the academy, it happened. The murder of Sabine and Darrian. They had been an even bigger thorn in the Dark Lord's side, capturing ten death eaters the first year. But after Jovanna's birth, they had gone into hiding. Apparently they didn't hide well enough. Kida was the first to arrive at the scene. She almost thought Jovanna had been killed as well, but then found the baby where she had been hidden, not far from where Sabine had died. Kida took Jovanna and resigned from the aurors, though she stayed on the "reserve" list. She moved to a small wizarding town just outside Edinburgh, where she had bought a house the year before, and raised Jovanna by herself. With some sadness, she watched the baby grow into a young women much like her mother. When Jovanna headed off to school, Kida found she was a little lonely around the empty house, so she went back to work for the ministry as a hit wizard, since there wasn't a need for aurors at the time and Kida couldn't stand a desk job. But when the threat of the Dark Lord loomed on the horizon once again, Kida was called up with the rest of the aurors to active duty. Sadly, Kida was killed in the final battle with the Dark Lord.
Jovanna was born to Darrian Jatal and Sabine Caliburne in Pendragon Creek, England. Shortly after Jovanna's first birthday, her parents were killed by Voldemort. Her mother had hidden her well, and Jovanna survived the attack. Jovanna went to live with her godmother "Aunt Kida" in Scotland. She had a happy childhood, playing in the woods around her house and reading every book she could get her hands on. Early in her childhood, Kida began teaching Jovanna the martial arts and weaponry, as she had been taught. Jovanna took to them rather well, showing a bit of talent in both. It was discovered that Jovanna had the healing gift when she was eight years old. So she was sent to a special magic school in America that had a program for healers. But every break Jovanna went back to Scotland to visit her godmother. When Jovanna was a second year, her pyrokinesis manifested. Jovanna had gotten into an argument with a girl from another house, and the other girl made an extremely rude and disrespectful remark about Jovanna's deceased parents. Jovanna lost her head and somehow managed to set the girl's robes on fire. The girl was badly burned and Jovanna lived in terror for almost a year that something similar would happen. She was so scared of her power, that she had the headmistress construct a psychic barrier around her pyrokinesis. But during her sixth year, the barrier began to degrade and Jovanna was forced to learn to control her power. During all this, Jovanna also worked on her healing. At the end of her sixth year she took and passed the healer's exam and was admitted to the healers' guild. Phoenix was one of the few American schools that had a school Quidditch team in addition to the house Quadpot teams. Jovanna was the Keeper on her school's quidditch team, and the Phoenixes were district champs four years in a row.
Jovanna left Phoenix when she was 16 so she could attend Hogwarts her seventh year. While Kida wanted to keep Jovanna as far away as possible from the things happening in Britain, Jovanna wanted to be close to her godmother. She put in for a transfer without her godmother's knowledge and was accepted. Saying good-bye to her friends in the States, Jovanna packed her things and moved back to Scotland. Like her parents and godmother, she was sorted into Gryffindor. And like her father, Jovanna made a hobby of studying spells. The little free time she had from homework and friends, she spent teaching herself different spells. Because of her extensive knowledge of spells, Jovanna was one of the students involved in the fighting with the Death Eaters at the end of the year. During the final battle with the Dark Lord, which came to be known as the Battle of Hogwarts, Jovanna's godmother was killed. Jovanna made it out of the battle with only a few minor wounds, but was devastated to find out her godmother had died. After graduating, Jovanna sent her application to the Auror's Academy and was accepted. Like at Hogwarts, she did well in her studies and graduated near the top of her class. In the years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Jovanna and the rest of the Aurors scoured the globe, tracking down the remaining Death Eaters. But even that came to an end, and Jovanna was left somewhat confused on how to carry on with her life once the Dark Lord and his followers were gone. Deciding to play to her strengths, Jovanna tried out for several quidditch teams and was finally accepted as the back-up keeper for the Falmouth Falcons. During her third year with the club, the previous keeper retired and Jovanna became the full-time keeper.
When the Gadianton Patrol began to appear about five years later, Jovanna, like the rest of the wizarding world, was unaware of it's true intent. But she gradually realized that the GP was more dangerous than it appeared, she rejoined the Aurors and a few years after that helped form the Phoenix Patrol. She headed the Phoenix Patrol for several years before handing over the leadership to another. After the Second Battle of Hogwarts, in which the school was almost totally destroyed, Jovanna was chosen with three others to head the rebuilding of the school, by the remade Wizards Council. The four then headed the school together for several years, like the four founders of old, but one by one, the other three were killed in battles over the years until only Jovanna was left. So now she heads the school alone.
