History & Physical Description

History : Devora was born to muggle parents in Swansea, Wales on a stormy night in early October. Her father, Dylan, was a fisherman and her mother, Catrin, was a school teacher. Because neither Dylan nor Catrin's jobs brought in too much money, they decided to have only one child whether boy or girl. Devora was that child. Her parents doted on her completely, and if her wish was not too outlandish for their slim pocketbook and not completely nonsense, they gave it too her. And Devora's one love was books. Early in her childhood Devora became fasinated by her mother's collection of fantesy books, as Catrin would often read her bedtime stories by Hans Christian Andersen, The Grimm Brothers and others. Stories like The Princess and the Goblin, Cinderella, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Rapunzel, The Swan Princess, and Sleeping Beauty became the only thing Devora thought about, other than school work. But Devora also loved the modern fantasy books, and ever once in a while a new book would be added to her mother's collection. The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, The Once and Future King, A Wrinkle in Time, The Prydain Chronicles, The Last Unicorn, Dragonriders of Pern all found their way onto the bookshelf at some point, some when she was almost grown. Little did she knew her own life would become something of a fairy tale.
When she was ten, Devora had her first vision. She had been sitting on a hill over looking the sea reading when the world suddenly fell away. She saw her father, out in his boat with his friend and fishing partner Idris Martyn. They were hauling in a netful of fish when Idris suddenly lost his footing and fell in. When Devora came too she thought she had simply fallen asleep. That night at dinner Dylan joked at dinner how Idris had tried to join the fishes and Devora realized she either had a very vivid imagination, or something was very odd. After a while, she forgot about the unusual coincidence until the summer after she turned eleven. While she was reading on the same hill one day in mid July, she had a sudden vision of an owl flying through the kitchen window, her father swatting at it and the owl landing in her mother's skillet of eggs. She brushed it aside and a sudden burst of odd imagination, but the next morning at breakfast the exact thing she had seen happened. A large brown owl swooped in through the window. Dylan swatted at the owl, trying to get it to go back out and it over balanced as it tried to avoid him. As the owl landed in Catrin's skillet as she set it down on the table and she shrieked. Devora on the other hand noticed that the owl had an envelope in it's talons. Plucking the envelope from it's grasp, she was shocked to find her name on the front. And so Devora discovered she was a witch. After Dylan and Catrin had gotten over the shock of the owl, they were somewhat surprised by the news. Dylan admitted that there were some odd stories in his family about some of his ancestors, and they figured that's where the magic came from.
And so Devora went to Hogwarts and was sorted into Ravenclaw. She continued to have small visions and premonitions every once in a while, though they began to increase in frequancy until she was having one or two a month. Then at the end of her second year, Devora was sitting by the lake reading when she had a strong vision of a woman talking to the headmaster seemingly about her. The next day Dumbledore called Devora to his office and introduced her to the woman she had seen as Stela Nicholi, the Oracle of Ogygia. He explained that Stela was the headmistress of a school that specialised in anything that had to do with divination and other extrasensory gifts: Ogygia Academy for Clairvoyants, located on the unplottable island Ogygia in the Ionian Sea. Stela told Devora that she'd been scying for possible students and had seen her. Devora admitted that she had been seeing things for the past three years, but that she'd thought she could just take divination at Hogwarts; she hadn't known there was a whole school for it. Dumbledore asked her if she would like to transfer to Ogygia and Devora said she would.
When she was 21, Devora left Ogygia having finished her training as far as the school could take her. While she deeply appreciated her gift, she didn't want to spend her life telling fortunes for muggles or wizards. So she decided to open a a Divination shop in Diagon Alley, The Seer's Crystal. She sold divination books, tarot cards, crystal balls, rune sets, numerology charts, astrology kits, pendulums, scrying bowls, and even eastern divination tools like I Ching coins and Chien Tung sticks. But Devora would also do readings in the back if a person asked nice enough. They had to ask; Devora would never give a reading to someone that demanded one. Business has been increasing over the years, and Devora has just receintly decided to open a second shop in Hogsmeade, partially to cater to the Divination students in Hogwarts. The Divination Confrence was a good excuse for her to visit the town and decide where she wants to open the shop.

Appearance : Even though she's "over the hill," Devora still looks quite young, maybe in her thirties. Her long wazy light blonde hair she usually keeps unbound, though she certainly pays for that at night when she brushes it out. But her hair is her one vainity, plus it certainly gives her a slight dramatic air as she goes about her shop. Devora's eyes are a light blue, "like the sea on a sunny day" her father once stated. They're large and open, but hold a spark that hints at something deeper, a knowledge only she pocesses. During a vision or premonition her eyes will take on a half-shocked staring expression and the blue will take on a slightly greyish tint. Unlike some seers, Devora likes to dress somewhat casually, and not broadcast her gift. She usually wears simple blue or green work robes and her emerald seerstone. The stone was a gift from the Oracle of Ogygia and Devora never removes it.

Siblings, Parents, and other important relationships : Father: Dylan Armes; Mother: Catrin Benbow

Strengths : Devora is a Emerald seer, a mid-level seer. She has more accurate and more frequent premonitions than the low-level Glass Seers, but is certainly not as powerful as the Diamond seers. Devora is also capable of some wandless magic, not much, but she does a very good summoning charm.

Weaknesses : Devora is completely scatter-brained in anything that doesn't deal with her seeing. She looses her broom, her cauldron, her favorite jewelry, even her wand on occasion. This was the reason for her forcing herself to learn some wandless magic.

((Meh... glass/emerald/diamond seer stuff borrowed from Cygnus Crux's Mind War. Wonderful fic.))
