Character Information
Name: Berlioz Jason Callaghan
Age: 18
Sex: Male
Place of Birth: London, England
Blood: Muggleborn
Year: 1st
House preference?: Consilium
Physical Appearance: Berlioz is about 5' 11" and weighs about 150 lbs. His blue/grey eyes are usually fixed on some distant point, but if he's confronted with a girl, they're usually fixed on the floor. Somewhere between blonde and brown, his hair isn't that unusual a color. But the fact that it falls in slight curls is certainly considered cute by some. And then there's the fact that when he's agitated, Berlioz will run a hand through his hair, causing it to stand somewhat on end, again, considered by some to be cute. After his little sister Kalli accidently turned the ends of his hair golden the summer before his seventh year, Berlioz left it that way, rather liking the effect, plus that Sammi had told him she liked it.
Thin but slightly muscular, Berlioz has a bit of a narrow face, but a well defined chin. One of Berlioz's signature features is his blush. It's one of those blushes that is none to suttle and will quickly but gradually creep onto his face until he's completely beet red. While that type of blush isn't all that uncommon, it's how little it takes to set the blush off. Like a short kiss from a certain Scottish girl named Sammi.
Berlioz has a small scar on the back of his right leg from a dog bite when he was a child and he has a few faint scars on his right upper arm from a house fire. Berlioz usually tries to dress comfortable but semi-stylish. When not in uniform, he likes to wear jeans and a polo shirt, and a jean jacket if it's chilly. No matter what, he always has his wand and a poetry book his father gave him for his 12th birthday.
Family: Parents: Matthew Aaron Callaghan (53) & Marion Rebecca Sutherland (49)
Sibling(s): Franz Hector (25), Persephone Camille (21), Kalliope Amalia (10)
Personality: Berlioz is an all around pleasant and easy-going person. Generally a quiet and restrained individual, Berlioz is the listener in his group of friends. He's always there to offer a friendly ear to those that know him (and some that don't) and dole out what handy advice he can. He is very empathic toward how others feel and usually knows when to drop a subject. Because of this, Berlioz is pretty much an easy person to like, though he does have a slight problem with listening too much and not talking enough. (But a few people have realized his potential for natural comic relief... stick a girl next to him and sit back for some laughs...) But when I say, generally, I mean, generally. Berlioz does have moments where he comes out of his shell with some really off the wall idea. But he was a Ravenclaw after all... and to be gifted with intelligence, one must give up some small part of his sanity...
Berlioz is also very good with words and can be very tactful when necessary. He listens carefully when people talk to him. Diplomatic in the way he handles other people, Berlioz likes to always give others the benefit of the doubt. His good nature gives him the desire to understand and help others with their problems but, at the same time, Berlioz can become too involved in their problems and, as a result, worry too much. However, once a girl invades his comfort zone, Berlioz becomes bashful and shy. He will avoid the girls at all costs, as long as he can do it politely. Berlioz will avoid being rude even more than he will avoid a girl.
By nature he's also very responsible. A hard working student, Berlioz works diligently for his marks. Well, not all that hard, but he does work for them. During the years he spent in muggle school, before he was informed he was a wizard, Berlioz had thought he would attend maybe Eton or his Purcell, and had prepared for such high profile and select schools. His studious nature was one of the things that caused him to be sorted into Ravenclaw, along with his witty sense of humor. And while he's main focus is his studies and the piano, Berlioz does try to spend as much time as possible with friends.
History: Matthew was born to Edward Davis Callaghan and Emma Isabelle Fredricks in Dublin, Ireland. Matthew was the oldest of four boys: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. His parents never had any girls. Matthew's father, Edward, was an accountant, and his mother, Emma, was a school teacher. Through this combination, the boys were taught to value education and all four went through school with excellent marks. John became a dentist. Luke became a lawyer. Mark became an architect. Matthew followed in his mother's footsteps and became a teacher. He earned his doctorate in Greek at University College Dublin and now teaches Greek at Eton.
Marion was born to Howard Brian Sutherland and Sarah Janelle Anderson in London, England. Howard was a banker and Sarah was a professional violinist playing in the London Symphony. Marion was an only child and therefore was a little pampered. Her parents gave her her heart's every desire, including music painting, dancing, fencing, swimming and horseback riding lessons. Only the music stuck with her. Marion had her mother's talent for music and had a love for the piano, so piano it was. Marion attended the Purcell School from her childhood to youth and then attended the Royal College of Music in London. After graduating, Marion began entering contests to create a name for herself, and soon was giving concerts with the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Matthew and Marion met about six years after Matthew started teaching at Eton and four years after Marion graduated from the Royal College. Marion was giving a concert at Eton and Matthew happened to attend. Matthew was smitten at first sight by her grace and quite elegance. As Marion was already a well-know pianist, Matthew was somewhat nervous to approach her, but soon gathered the courage and asked her on a date. Marion accepted and the two soon fell in love and were married.
Berlioz was the third child of four. On account of his unusual name, there is a perfectly legitimate reason. For the boys, Marion chose the first name (musically related) and Matthew chose the middle name (Greek related). For the girls, Matthew chose the first name and Marion chose the middle name. Berlioz showed he had inherited his mother's talent for music at an early age. At three, the piano bench was an object of interest for him, and he would constantly climb up on it to bang at the piano keys. After turning four, Marion began teaching Berlioz to play the piano. And thus it started. Berlioz has been playing for twelve years now and even the revelation that he was a wizard has not deterred him from his desire to go professional.
Berlioz's older siblings are both non-magical, like their parents. Franz is married and his wife, Amie, is expecting their first child. Franz works as a computer programmer and Amie is a tutor. Persephone is currently attending medical school with plans to become a pediatrician. Kalliope, or Kalli, Berlioz's little sister, has shown she is a witch like her favorite brother Berli, though like Berlioz, Kalli was somewhat a "late bloomer." Berlioz's first act of baby magic was when he was eight and a half. He had been having difficulty with a piece of music and was stomping around the piano room when the vase suddenly flew off the piano and smashed into the far wall. Kalli's first bit of magic was actually when she was seven and a half, beating her brother by a whole year. Berlioz is quite close to his little sister, and misses her quite a bit during the school year. Kalli is currently anxiously waiting the final year before her Hogwarts letter. Berlioz has assured her that she'll get it, but that doesn't stop her from worrying.
While Berlioz's fear of injuring his hands is understandible since he is a pianist, his fear of fire and dogs goes back to his childhood. When Berlioz was six, his family's house caught on fire. Berlioz had been trapped in the upstairs by the flames as the rest of the family had been in the downstairs when the fire started. Even though he had passed out from smoke inhalation by the time a fire fighter managed to rescue him, Berlioz's dreams were haunted by flames for many years after. Then when he was ten, Berlioz had been at his Uncle Luke's house, when his uncle's big Irish Wolfhound, Foofoo, for some reason bit him on the leg. Berlioz ran screaming into the house, with Foofoo not far behind. Luke took Berlioz to the hospital and had him patched up. The cause of the bite was never determined, and Berlioz harbors a deepset fear of large dogs. In an attempt to help him avoid his fears, Luke would keep Foofoo out of sight when ever it was nessecary for Berlioz to be at his house. Because dogs were so common, Berlioz started staying indoors more and more often. And thus stemmed his love for books and poetry, as he needing something to pass the time with and Marion would not allow him to play the piano all day long.
Berlioz was quite surprised when he received his Hogwarts letter, but like most muggleborn wizards it explained a few things. Berlioz was quickly sorted into Ravenclaw by the sorting hat because of his analytical mind and studios nature. Since Berlioz's parents were muggles, they hadn't heard anything about the events going on in the wizarding world over the past year. They trusted Berlioz to be responsible enough to tell them if something was important. Berlioz had refrained from mentioning any of the rather, unusual events of his years at Hogwarts, like the petrification of several muggleborns during his second year, Sirius Black's escape during his third (his parent still think he's a muggle murderer), and the Triwizard Tournament his fourth. He had not wanted to alarm his parents in any way, but at the end of his fifth year, Berlioz realized the time had come to level with his parents.
Once he got home he sat down with his parents (after tearing his little sister from his legs and sending her to her room with a promise to spend the rest of the day with her... after he talked with mum and dad) and explained about Voldemort, who he was, what he had done in the past, and that he was now back. It took his parents a while to comprehend and ingest what their youngest son was telling them. Matthew and Marion didn't like the sound of an evil wizard going around killing non-magic folk, and for a little while they considered pulling Berlioz out of Hogwarts and sending him to Eton or Purcell or anywhere else, but Hogwarts. After some thought though, and a few more talks with their youngest son, Matthew and Marion decided that be best thing Berlioz could do was to stay at Hogwarts and complete his magical education, that way he'd skilled enough to help if the need should arise.
Berlioz went back to Hogwarts for his sixth year with a new goal, to learn everything he could about defense. He was going to make sure he could protect his family and allow his little sister to learn magic safely. For the next two year he studied hard and often took time outside of class to teach himself different defense spells he researched in the library. At the end of his seventh year he graduated with NEWTs in several subjects, the most in defense. During the battle on the school grounds Berlioz sort of bonded with a girl from his house, Samantha Philips, and they started going out. With the Dark Lord gone, Berlioz was thinking of going back to his previous plans to be a concert pianist, but decided to earn a magical degree to fall back on if he couldn't find a position as a pianist. The summer following his seventh year consisted of spending time with Sammi and working on college plans, sometimes at the same time. After some thought he decided that ASU was the school he wanted. Plus, it didn't hurt that Sammi was applying there as well. When Sammi's twin brother, Tim, was killed, Berlioz helped Sammi hold together and was the one that convinced her to continue with her plans for college. Tim's death affected him as well, as he and Tim had been in the same dorm, though he knew it affected Sammi a lot more than him. It was a sobering reminder that even with the Dark Lord gone they still weren't quite safe, as Tim had been killed by loose Death Eater. The Death Eater was later killed. But that of course couldn't bring Tim back. This did cause Berlioz and Sammi to get a bit closer, and Berlioz is starting to wonder just how serious a relationship this is going to turn into.
