Bob Dylan sang "Everybody Must Get Stoned" but I prefer to stone my lawn.Unlike grass, stone doesn't need to be fertilized, watered, mowed and trimmed, and a lawnful of stone creatures seems to frighten away my neighborhood's herd of ravenous deer.
The sculptures on this page are made with sandstone river rocks, sandstone slabs, Quickrete Cement and dyes, Bondo-Hair auto-body filler, irredescent marbles, chunks of old bricks, cinder blocks and acrylic paint. Most pieces are coated with polymer/epoxy as weatherproofing.
In general, these pieces weigh between 150 and 800 pounds. I've found sandstone to be the ideal building material. It's plentiful, cheaper than hamburger, more durable than a bad memory, whimsically shaped and--in itself--a constant source of inspiration.
I encourage others to experiment with this sort of lawn sculpture. After all, grass is a drag, but sandstone rocks!
