LOGIC And REALITY

Logic requires that the law of contradiction hold. This law means that if a statement is true then this statement cannot also simultaneous be false because it will lead to a contradiction. For example, if the statement, 1+1=2 (statement1) is true then the statement 1+1!=2 (statement2) cannot also be true since it contradicts statement1. In our reality (when I use the word reality I am referring to the part of the universe that we have observed with our senses) logic is always valid and it gives humans the ability to be rational beings. Logic is the anchor of rationality since without logic the law of contradiction would not hold. Rationality cannot exist without logic because the objective of rationality is to determine whether or not a statement is true or false. There would not be any point in reasoning in an illogical universe since a statement can both be true and false. The other question now is to determine whether or not truths are dependent on logic.

Truth cannot be dependent on logic since there may be a reality where statement1 and statement2 can both be true simultaneously. Thus, 1+1=2 and 1+1!=2 can simultaneous be true in such a reality. However, in a logical reality such truths are not allowed since they lead to a contradiction. Therefore, in our reality there are truths that are bounded by logic but this does not mean that truths depend on logic since there can be another reality where there are truths that are independent of logic.

Kant argued that we constituted reality from our five senses, sight, smell, taste, touch and hear. Everything that we know about our reality is based on these senses. If we had different senses or lacked a few senses then our reality would be different. For example, bats that can only detect space or objects will have a different reality that ours since we have eyes instead of their sensors. While we are able to distinguish the colour and more defined features of an object with our eyes, a bat cannot detect such features since they do not have eyes. Therefore, a bat would be unable to differentiate a red car from a black car since in a bats reality colour does not exist.

Our senses detect truths that are bounded by logic, which allows us to create our reality. However, we cannot know whether or not our perception of reality corresponds to the actual reality since our sensors can be fooled. Like the movies, The Matrix and The Thirteenth Floor pointed out, we may exist in a simulated world and we would not be aware of this since our sensors will not be able to detect this occurrence. However, whether or not we exist in a simulated world is irrelevant since we are the creators of our reality. Thus reality is what is perceived using our senses whether or not it is an actual world or a simulated world. Also if we do exist in a simulated world, it is highly unlikely that we would ever be able to detect such an occurrence because we are enslaved by our senses.
