The Times They Are A Changin'

By Vanzetti & Yossarian

As students of Turpin High School you probably havent been taught much about Students rights or the Constitution, and living in old WASPville U.S.A. you probably dont have much access to meaningful points of view being allowed into any form of popular media. Well when they wont allow you into their media, you must make media of your own! And that is what we have set out to do. Not to offer an absolute right in a sea of wrongs, but rather to stimulate people into a more open way of thinking. To offer an alternative to the network TV newss pointless banter, the Enquirers non-stop corporate gibberish, and the Lancers endless supply of stupid stories that have noting to do with anything the least bit important.  We wish to set up a forum in which students will be allowed freedom of expression and opinion on a wide range of issues dealing with our school, our government, our world, and our lives.

This forum will be free from the influences of the school administration (whether they like it or not) and run solely by members of the Turpin student body.  We have the right to do this and were going to. We are given this right by the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution that provides for both freedom of speech as well as freedom of the press.  In a landmark decision the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights apply to people even while they are attending a public high school. (Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, 399 U.S. 503, 89 S Ct. 733 (1969)) ;

The  handbook best illustrates this utter disrespect for the rights of other human beings in its guidelines regarding the distribution of materials within the public school building. It states that the administration must consent with a letter of approval to any materials published by non-school sponsored groups; this is simply false. They have no authority to review any materials that are produced outside of school, are not school sponsored, and are independently funded. (Burch v. Barker, 861 F.2d 1 149 (9th cir. 1988); Fujishma v. Board of Education, 160 F.2d 1355 (7th Cir. 1971))  You are also allowed to distribute these materials in any way you find fit provided it does not disrupt daily school operation, i.e. creating a bottleneck in the halls and making people late for class. (Hedges v. Wauconda Community School District 118, 9 F. 3d 1295 (7th Cir. 1993))

                The attempted treasonous and downright unpatriotic policies put forth by the administration, school board and superintendent must be changed. If you believe that violations of your Constitutional rights are a problem then you should write and circulate petitions against the policies of all afore mentioned groups. Also you may contact us using the contact info contained within this publication, your feedback is always appreciated. You can learn more about students right by visiting www.ACLU.org.
