| Summary |
An enjoyable, story reflecting the classic Ugly Duckling, however the characters have changed. A duck egg is put with a chicken family. The story is about this duck growing up to be a chicken and things just don't seem right. Finally, he discovers who he really is and is extremely satisfied.
It is an older book, 1957, with pencil and charcoal drawings mixed with a pronounced color of yellow associated with the baby duck's identity.
Baby duck is desperately searching for his own identity because the mother chicken who helped has him is certainly not very welcoming to him. The illustrator does an excellent job of the baby duck discovering other things that are yellow. This style of being a little slow in learning as the mother chicken points out further reflects the meaningful way in which the duck discovers who he really is, despite his surroundings and the opinions of others (mother chicken). As the duck grows older he changes not only in size and color but also his happiness.
