As part of our Early Literacy
Program, we study word families and rhyming words. Using Nursery
Rhymes, we introduce our children to these concepts through familiar pieces of literature. In the nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock we focused on the “-ock” rhyming words and words that could be built around that sound. Hickory Dickory Dock Clock Ingredients: Graham Crackers Cucumber Celery Carrot Cheese Slices Directions: 1. Pre-slice the cucumber and carrot
into circles. (The carrot circles
should be smaller than the cucumber circles.) 2. Pre-cut the celery into short thin strips. 3. Pre-cut the cheese slices into rectangular strips to fit on lower two-thirds of graham cracker. 4. Give each child one of each: a graham cracker, a cucumber circle, a strip of cheese, a celery stick, and a carrot circle. 5. Instruct the children to place the cucumber circle near the top of the cracker; the strip of cheese under that, the celery stick in the middle on top of the cheese strip, and the carrot circle at the bottom of the celery stick. This will form the grandfather clock. Tiny pieces of carrot may be used for the clock hands, pointing to one o’clock of course! 6. Children may take their apple mice and make them run up the side of the clock. 7. Enjoy eating your healthy snack. Apple Mice Ingredients:
Apples Almond slivers Cloves Carrots Directions: 1. Quarter the apples and give each
child one wedge.
2. Give each child two almond slivers and have them poke them into the peel side of the apple wedge. These will be the ears. 3. Give each child two cloves. Instruct them not to eat these. Press them into the sides of the apple wedge. These will be the eyes. 4. Give each child a curly carrot strip. Place it at the opposite end of the apple wedge, away from the face. This will be the tail. 5. Enjoy. Project Home |
