This large two-story structure is essentially Classical Revival in form and design inspiration with some Italianate influences. Constructed of rusticated sandstone, the gabled structure is L-shaped with deep cornices supported by paired brackets. Rather shallow gables contain large-scaled eave returns and smoothly textured quoins accent building corners. Segmented arches with keystones shape the projecting molding surrounding the double-hung windows. Entrances on the first floor are tall, arched and contain double doors.
Several masonry additions have been made to the rear of the structure in brown and green masonry. A fire escape stair [still existing ???], railings and balustrade has been added.
Smaller in scale and height than the nearby Capitol, this structure is compatible with other nearby buildings and serves as a focal point among the adjacent parking lots.
The structure is both historically and architecturally significant. It was designed by architect M.J. Curtis of Reno and constructed in 1885-1886. The building served first as the Nevada State Printing Office and was the first separate addition to what was to become a cluster of state buildings. The building now serves as, and is attached to the newer building of, the Nevada State Archives and offices.
The structure is an exceptionally fine architectural work and an impressive rendition of this style. The building is a notable representative of the important Carson City tradition of stone building, and a significant adjunct the outstanding complex of state buildings in the city.
