One is a creature of the night the other of light. Always one but forever separated by their nature. It is when we cross these invisible lines that the web begins to sway. The spider searches for pray that has fallen into his domain. But who is the predator and who is the pray? Both are trapped by their nature. Never forget children, kiss the light, but embrace the night." Chapter one The cold New York nights had grown even more chilly. Virginia Wolf road her bike threw the abandoned Central Park after a long exhausting day at The Grill on the Park. She never complained about it though. She thought the owner Mr. Marston was very nice by hiring her back after her sudden disappearance. With Wolf, or Warren Wolf as he was now known, taking over the position of janitor for Mr. Murray they took up residency at her old apartment. Every week she'd put what little bit of money they could spare after groceries and things for the baby, hoping that their dream of starting their own restaurant would come true. She rode silently feeling very much alone. Wolf had been gone for most of the weeks helping King Wendell in the Nine Kingdoms restore peace in an outer providence. It seemed that the troll King's bumbling children had actually raised quite an army against the fifth Kingdom and Wolf was needed to disperse the Wolf faction. Just after there son Lucas was born King Wendell had given Wolf the position of ambassador to all wolves in the kingdom making sure that they too had a say in it's politics. Wolf found the diplomatic part very boring, but did what ever he could to fight for wolves' rights in the kingdoms. Virginia was touched by his devotion and knew it was mostly in honor of his parents, a sad and still sore part of wolf's past. With wolf gone and Lucas staying with his Grandpa Tony in the fifth kingdom Virginia was left for the entire week alone. "Consider this a vacation!" Wolf had said as he struggled to dress the squirming one-year-old. "Isn't that right Lucas! Mommy doesn’t have to worry about cleaning up after us or listening to us cry!" He teased playfully as he pulled Lucas's last shoe on. "Are you sure you don't need me to come along?" Virginia asked concerned. "My sweet you can come if you'd like, but you know I'll be gone most of the time and that leaves you at the palace with your Dad and new step mom!" Virginia grimaced at that announcement. How could her dad have married that woman! She was like twenty years to young for him and had the personality of a carrot! "No you're right. I'd probably just get in the way anyhow." She sunk down on the couch thumbing threw the diaper bag Wolf had packed making sure that nothing was missing. Wolf had seen her sullen expression and left Lucas playing on the floor while he snatched Virginia off the couch and into his arms. "You could never be in the way! I wouldn't even be going if this weren't so important! " He ran the back of his hand down her cheek. "I love you Virginia and when I am back in a week I'll prove it!" He gave her a playful growl as he captured her mouth in a passionate kiss. The sudden sound of Lucas's little toy fair truck made them both look up. Lucas sat on the floor grinning innocently back. He looked so much like his dad minus the tail. His bright and playful eyes glowed at his little joke. Virginia and Wolf looked at each other for a brief moment then pounced on their son watching him dissolve into a fit of shrieks and giggles. Now they were gone and Virginia missed them so much. Every time they went away she felt as if part of her life was missing. Tears began to steam from her ayes as she recalled bundling up her baby, kissing her husband good-bye and watching them disappear into the park. She peddled faster fighting the biting wind on her tear stained cheeks. Before she knew what happened the bike slammed into an over turned trashcan sending Virginia flying threw the air and onto the path. Virginia rolled a few feet until she finally stopped collapsing into a tangled heap. The world turned black as the back of her head slammed against the pavement. A puddle of blood began to pour from underneath her head as the crimson pool stained the collar of her white blouse. The park was silent as Virginia laid helplessly unconscious bleeding to death. Vachon had been sitting quietly on a park bench reflecting. He had escaped briefly to New York to escape Tracy. No matter how hard he tried to distance himself from her he couldn't. She was always about asking question, poking around his things. Yet he knew he couldn't deny her what she desired. The truth was he felt himself becoming more attached to this mortal woman, much to close for his comfort. His life was a path of solitude; he was a vampire and knew from his life experiences that it was a death sentence for his human consorts. "If it wasn't for Nick and his obsession with them, being like them, living like them." He cursed silently. Vachon knew better than to waste time dwelling on the unobtainable. He was a vampire and no amount of role-playing would change it. What was so bad about it anyway? His life wasn't too terrible. Other than the death of his friend Screed he was fine. Maybe a lot more alone then he had ever felt before, but that was his lot. He was a creature of solitude. Yet Tracy had invited this light into his life he had so long denied. Even in his darkest hour when he felt that he would once again be joining the sun, she would not give up on him She knew his secret had seen his hunger, but still came back. The thoughts of Nick and Natalie romance seemed to him like one of those twisted fairytales. Two people deeply in love but denied by their natures. It just wasn't possible to love a mortal unless... but the thought of bringing Tracy across was truly not an option. He had discovered awhile back that it was her mortality that he found the most amusing. That was she approached her knew found knowledge of the super natural like a kid at Christmas. He thought it even more amusing that here she stood so close to the truth and even as a homicide detective had not discovered her partner Nick's true vampiric identity. Vachon looked down into the bottle he held in his hand. A constant reminder, the hunger he felt deep inside. He took a swig then stood up to seek his fortune in the New York nightlife. After a moment his highly acute sense of hearing caught the sound of a woman's muffled short scream, followed by the sent of sweet blood. Vachon didn't know if it was the hunger. Or the briefly pleading voice that drew him deeper into the park. What ever it was he would soon find out his answer. A rather beautiful brown haired woman lay sprawled across the pavement, blood pouring out of the wound in her head. Vachon could hear the sound of her heart slowly fading. He scanned the area noticing the smashed bike and garbage can lying carelessly in the middle of the trail. A soft mumble drew his attention as the woman began to stir weakly. "Help me please!" She whispered goggle from her dark descent. Vachon listened to her heartbeats slow to nothing. What should he do? Drain what little blood she had then leave her in death? Find someone to care for her, but he realized from the damage to her head that it was probably to late. He looked into her face as he knelt beside the dying woman. Her eyes fluttered open briefly. Then closed for what Vachon knew would probably be the last moment. I that moment that she had stare up at him he knew her thoughts. Her mind swam with images of her husband and infant son. Her father, mother and dozens more people appeared in his mind. He pulled her up until she lay resting in his harms on the ground. Blood ran down his shirt and into his lap. He pulled her closer to him deciding at that very moment to take all her blood and leave her in death. "I'll help you sleep." He said with a surprising compassion. Suddenly his eyes began to glow as the hunger took over and he sunk his teeth into her neck. In that instant he could feel her life slipping away so near to him. Then distorted images of mirrors and strange images like castles and faeries came into view. Her found memories of her husband with a tail? Vachon jumped alert to the last image in his mind. And released the near dead woman onto the ground. "Who are you?" He asked panicked and confused. What ever it was it was far greater a force than he has ever touched in his entire life. He had felt her loneliness but also this greatness. He wasn't much of a philosopher but it's like she had a destiny that wasn't quite fulfilled yet. He stood ready to flee the scene when another thought struck him. What if he brought her across? She had so much energy, and a power surrounding her. What if he let her die? Suddenly as if in a trance he realized he couldn't let that happen. ""Do it!" Came a woman's voice with in his mind. "Save her!" Vachon turned suddenly expecting to see someone, but the park was empty. Things began to sway in his mind. Suddenly it was Tracy laying life less on the ground. Vachon approached the scene in disbelief. "Tracy?" He asked groggy. With that her lost all resistance to the controlling force. Sensing her so close to death weak beyond compare from lack of blood he tore open his arm and forced the blood into Tracy's mouth. After a moment she began to stir and the fog in Vachon's mind lifted and instead of Tracy he again came face to face with the girl. Her eye's fluttered open and blood stained her lips. 'Javier Vachon?" She questioned him weekly smiling sweetly. Vachon backed away. Her sweet and gracious smile faded away to a terrified and pain filled one. "What..." She questioned him falling over on here knees reaching toward him. He stepped back again viewing the scene with a clear mind. What had he done exactly? He turned and flew away from the scene leaving the girl behind. The dew York skyline spun in his vision as her landed in a near by alley. He walked down the narrow pass kicking over a trashcan causing a cat to shriek and dart in front of him. Vashon's head swam with images of a place he believed couldn't exist. What exactly had happen? What ever it was he knew it wasn't good! Maybe New York wasn't such a good place to come after all. He decided he needed to find a place to rest, the dawn would come soon enough. Tomorrow night he would leave the city and try to leave the night behind him. He thought of Virginia. He knew that was her name now he tasted her whole life from her blood. Virginia stumbled into her apartment just before the dawn. She pulled off her blood stained blouse and tossed it onto the floor. Then grabbed the bottle of aspirin sitting on her nightstand. As the water filled her throat she had a sudden urge to vomit so made a mad dash for the bathroom. Shaken and cold she sat on the floor near the toilet and leaned against the wall. Virginia reached up to examine the wound at the back of her head wondering if any stitches would be required. She could feel the dried blood caked to the back of her head, but found no apparent wound. "You are to lucky" Virginia moaned to herself. Then pulled herself over to the bathtub and turned on the water. Steam rose from the faucet as the water spilled out. The sound echoed clearly in Virginia's mind. Slowly she slipped out of the rest of her clothes and stepped into the warm tub. After soaking for what seemed like forever Virginia began to concentrate on the night's events. She remembered waking in the park, her bike had been wreaked and blood was every where. She left the scene quickly and raced to the apartment frightened and confused. Everything seemed a blur. She turned of the taps with her toes and leaned back into the now pink water. Her mind felt heavy and she began to drift asleep. Virginia began to dream she was standing in a bright field with Wolf and Lucas when all of the sudden the sun turned red like blood and she realized it wasn't day at all, but night and a huge red moon shown bright in the sky. She looked away from the crimson colored sphere to see Wolf's eyes begin to glow and his low growl echoed like thunder. She watched her son stumble away heading deep into the forest near by. She backed away from Wolf and started to run after Lucas. She could here her heart pound as she caught up with her baby son. In front of her a dark man dressed in black appeared. He reached down and scooped Lucas up. Virginia didn't know why but terror and hunger seized her? "Give me my baby!" She pleaded with the man. "Please LaCroix!" She begged again. She watched as he smiled devilishly and set her son on the ground. Virginia started forward to retrieve him when Wolf seized her by the arm. "I won't let you hurt my son!" He growled his eyes glowing and fangs bared. "Let me go!" She screamed at Wolf pulling away from his grasp. "I mean it Virginia! Don't make me hurt you!" He tightened his grasp and started to drag her away. "No!" She screamed raking her fingernails across his face. Her eyes began to glow and she could feel blood on her lips. Sweet warm blood. Suddenly she realized it wasn't her heartbeat she was listening to at all, but Lucas's. Using her new strength she threw Wolf onto the forest ground, and turned toward LaCroix and Lucas. The baby stood before her smelling of a sweet fruit. She made her way forward stretching out a hand toward the child. As she touched Lucas's arm another hand grasp her around the wrist. She looked up into the face of her mother Christine. Suddenly the whole forest melted and she was stood in their tiny little bathroom. "Look at the mess you have made!" She winced as her mother pulled at her arm and led her toward the tub. Virginia could here the water running, see the steam rising in heaps. "No!" Virginia screamed as Christine pushed her into the scalding tub. Virginia fell backwards flailing her arms trying to surface for air, but her mother kept pushing her under. The water splashed all over the floor as Virginia struggled to catch her breath. Her vision blurred under the layer of liquid as the surface turned pink. Just as things began to grow black an arm reached down and pulled her up. She sat up quickly gasping and spitting. Water flew everywhere as Virginia's eyes glowed brightly. Most of the water slashed onto the floor as she jumped out of the tub and landed on the slick floor with a thud. She sat pressing her back against the4 wall feeling colder than she had ever felt in her life. Yet she could sense little beads of sweat forming on her forehead. "What's happening!" She screamed tears spilling out of her eyes. Was she dreaming? What had just happened? She tucked her knees up to her chest and began to sob uncontrollably. The sun rose as Virginia sat in the small dark bathroom and cried herself to sleep. This time no dreams would come! Neither would peace.
