What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations is a role play of the real United Nations. Delegations compromising of both specialised UN agencies and  Member state Countries are represented by students meet together at each conference to discuss various topics which have been chosen upon. Each delegation has its own point of view and the students must form their opinion on any given topic around that of the delegation they are representing. Such that if a British Student was to represent Finland, In a conference they MUST debate from Finland's point of view and NOT a British one.

When a topic has been chosen for the conference agenda, a delegation has one week to prepare their opinion of it to be ready for the upcoming debate. Also, any country/agency may prepare a resolution and possibly merge it with allying countries to strengthen the resolutions chance of being passed. In the actual conference, the resolution is debated  and many conflicting views arise. Countries may argue for or against this resolution hoping to sway other delegation views in their favour. When the conference is nearing an end, the resolution is voted upon. There are three options that may be taken in the voting procedure. A delegation may chose to vote in favour if they agree with the resolution and like it; they may decide to vote against, if the resolution contradicts their countries opinion, or, finally they may chose to abstain in which a delegation has not made their mind up or simply that it does not effect them in anyway.

This is the simple concept of MUN although it is much more complex and professional than this as this is simplified for easy reading.

At SMUNC, we run our conferences very similar to that of International Conferences such as
THIMUN, and for more details, please click on the relevant link.
