Megan's Reading Problem

by Peter

It was during the last two months of school, and finals were coming up. Megan, one day while reading, stopped because she had a headache, and it hurt to keep on going. She didn't take it as a vision problem, but only that she was tired from reading since it was almost eleven thirty at night, and she woke up for school every morning at six fifteen.

She went into the bathroom and she took two Advil. In twenty minutes her headache went away, and she fell asleep. The next morning while at breakfast, she reached over and started to read the newspaper, to her, all the wors sort of just ran together, and her mom noticed this, she said "Megan, why are you shifting the newspaper around like that?"

Megan said " Oh, it's nothing mom, I'm just really tired and my eyes aren't focused on the paper yet". She then knew she needed to have an eye test done, but she didn't want to have to wear glasses. Both her parents had reading glasses, and bifocals when they didn't wear contacts, so after school that day, while she was doing her homework, she put her mom's reading glasses on.

Her sister Katie, who was two years younger, all the sudden came into the room, and was shocked to see Megan with moms glasses on.

She said "Megan, if you don't take those glasses off right now, I'm going to tell Mom you need glasses." Megan exclaimed, "Katie, knock it off, I'll take the glasses off, but don't tell Mom I need glasses please." "Ok, fine, I won't, but you're going to have to tell her soon." "Katie, I know".

Later that night, Katie told her Mom, "I had trouble today seeing the board in school, and I think I need glasses." "Well, her mom said, I'll make an appointment for you and your sister, you both haven't had one in a while".

Two days later, when Megan was going out the door to school, her mom yelled out, "Megan, come home right after school today." "Why?", Megan said, "Because I'm taking Katie to the eye doctor, and you're coming along too, because you haven't had your eyes checked in a while." "But mom, my eyes are fine", she protested, but her mom told her she had to come along.

At the eye doctor, her sister went in first, and read off the first three lines with ease, the third was fuzzy, but she could still see it. Katie got down to the fifth line and squinted but it was just black blobs.

The doctor put a machine in front of her and asked her which was clearer, she said the third, and after the test, the doctor said, "I'm glad you came in here, you are nearsighted and you will need your glasses to see everything twenty feet away from you, including when you get your driver's permit and license."

Katie's prescription was L-1.50 +.75, R-1.75 +1.00, Megan's test was different, she eased through the distance vision test, but when it came to the near vision test, it was a different story. Megan could see the first four lines, but the rest were blobs.

She tried squinting, but it gave her a headache, the doctor put the machine in front of her face, and asked her which was clearer. She said the fourth one, and the doctor after said to her, " You are farsighted, and why didn't you come to me sooner, because you're prescription is L +1.75, R +1.75, and that is moderately strong for a first prescription".
