Question:

My prescription is: Right: sphere -19.00, cylinder -1.00 axis 35; Left: sphere -18.50, cylinder -2.50 axis 172.5. Should I consider myodisc lenses? What the advantages and are they expensive? - NS

Most definitely myodisc lenses should be used. I can't imagine that you're not already in them!

Myodiscs come in either contact lenses or spectacles that high to cut down the thickness of the lens edge, and reduce the minification effect of the lenses.

As my experience with myodiscs is extremely limited, I can only comment on the basics.

Originally, myodiscs came about as a means of reducing weight in high minus prescriptions as the only lens material available was glass.

By placing the prescription in a smaller carrier in the middle of the lens rather than having the full Rx go all the way to the edge of the frame, they were lighter and more adaptable to different frames.

The modern lens materials enable higher minus prescriptions to be used without resorting to a myodisc, and of course bi-concave designs are also available.

The downsides to myodiscs are a limitation on peripheral vision and cosmetics, although the cosmetic aspect is somewhat subject to personal preference.

Ultimately, the decision to wear a myodisc should be made by the patient and doctor.
