| Well, I know I've never read anything like this before, but the usually helpful Amazon hasn't put this into a genre other than fiction. Which it isn't. But I've certainly not read anything along these lines before. My favourite book genres are fantasy, murder, craft, food, WW2, espionage and 'books'. This book I'm not quite sure where it fits in. Women's issues maybe, or social or feminism, maybe even a bit biographical. I apologise to anyone with stupid internet filters that can't cope with medical names, because I decided to buy myself a copy of the Vagina Monologues, by Eve Ensler. It had been recommended by an online community, so I thought I'd give it a go. It's a bit like Ronseal, being exactly as it states a collection of monologues about vaginas (well, probably vulvas actually, but I'll stick with the title). It covers pretty much everything from sex to periods, via rape and childbirth. It sounds quite heavy, but it's interspersed with much lighter pieces so overall it just has impact, rather than being weighty. It's a truely fantastic book, that provokes practically every emotion possible in its 120 pages. To be honest, me rambling here isn't going to do it any justice at all. While the harder bits probably need a slightly older audience, there are plenty of other bits that are suitable for any age. I couldn't put it down. The book has also spawned the V-day movement, aimed at stopping violence against women. February 14th is known as V-day, and is the time of year when across the world there are productions of the monologues, aimed at raising awareness and funds for women's charities. Stop reading me - go buy the book! |
