| Today is Monday, May 9th. Week 3 of 5 in Ecuador and another week has flown by. As much as we miss family, friends and animals, we are going to miss Ecuador when we leave, and for obvious reasons it will always be special to us. This weekend we travelled to the Mitad del Mundo (reputedly the centre of the Earth). We took lots of pictures, got properly sun burned (kissed), and then ventured to an inactive volcanic crater. Catching buses in Ecuador is always an adventure and when one drops you off at the bottom of an empty road that ascends into the clouds you are filled with fear and trepidation (this was compounded by the fact that we were met halfway up by a man weilding a machete). However, we ventured on and found the edge of the crater. Unfortunately, from the top we could see no more than 20 or so feet into its mouth because of a solid cloud formation nestled in the crater. We decided to descend into it via a treacherous, loose rock, steep inclined, winding path. Twenty minutes later we were at the top again. Winded, tired and ready for dinner. Classes are going well, schedules have changed and we both look forward to Fridays when we get to work together on English conversation skills with sexto curso (the equivalent of Grade 12 in Ontario). Last Friday, Shelley took her class to the planatarium in Quito. Here they saw, star charts, aerial photographs of various locations in Ecuador, and an IMAX-like film about the solar system and the Big Bang. Afterwards, they bought ice cream from a paper-thin man for pennies a scoop. A few days prior, Monty and one of his students entertained the school courtyard by singing (in harmony) and playing guitar during recess. We are both enjoying our classes immensely and never seem to be without a troop of little cherubs escorting us around the premises. Friday evening involved a dinner prepared by Diana and wine provided by the Razas to celebrate and toast our good news. We wish all of you were there with us in person as we are sure you were in spirit. All good things, Monty and Shelley |
