| Kelly Conlon was born on October 31, 1986. At the age of 5, Kelly had her first double lung transplant. For the next few years, she was able to enjoy her life like a normal kid. She liked riding her new bike, playing on swings ,and sliding down slides. When she was entering the 8th grade, she was put on a waiting list for her second double lung transplant. As years went by, it was harder for her to go to school every day. Soon she was getting tutors to help her keep up with all her classes and nurses to help her with everyday activities. Kelly went to school enough so that she knew exactly what she wanted to do in the 10th grade. She wanted to go in the field of enviromental sciences. Even though she wasn't in school very often, she had a great amount of friends. She would always try to live her life like a normal teenager, though it was very hard. Since she had health problems, it caused Kelly to mature at a very young age. Kelly would read Stephen King books in the 5th grade during recess. This caused her to be distant from her friends when they were still maturing. When she entered the high school, she made some more friends and became closer with her old ones again. When she entered the 12th grade, she had been waiting four years for her second transplant. On February 26, 2005 she got the call from the Children's Hospital saying that they had a pair of lungs for her. It wasn't until 8:00 am on February 27,2005 that Kelly actually went into surgery. She was in the O.R. for about 8 hours. After her transplant, Kelly was taking small but gradual steps to getting better. On Sunday March 20, 2005 Kelly went into crisis. My family and I went to the hospital that day to visit her. She was doing great that day and she was actually breathing on her own. It must have only been 3 minutes that we walked into the room and all of a sudden Kelly was complaining that she couldn't breath and she was having chest pain. One minute later, Katelynn and I were forced out of the room to make space for the doctors and nurses. We didn't think anything was going wrong because Katelynn and I grew up with Kelly complaining of chest pain and having trouble breathing. That was until Kelly fainted and the doctors started giving her chest compressions; which is usually a sign of cronic failure. Then I heard my mom scream and pratically collapse. Then doctors came and told us that Kelly had gone into crisis, for she was suffering from internal bleeding. About 30 minutes later, the doctors took Kelly into O.R. to try and find the source of bleeding and close it up. The doctors came out saying that they closed a blood vessel by her lungs. They said that they did the best they could fixing the vessel. They took her back up to ICU and put her on a lung and heart bypass machine. They tried to stop the bleeding as much as they could, but Kelly wasn't making enough platelets to clot the blood. It wasn't until around 2:35 am that we lost Kelly. All I know is that Kelly was an amazing girl and had a great impact on everyone that met her. She will forever be in our memories. |
