November 28, 2004 Classic Moral Story Aesops Tortoise and the Hare is a classic example of a moral story. The tortoise, although a small and slow-moving animal, ends up beating the speedy hare in a race. The tortoise is able to do so because he does not give up. He begins the race with a goal in mind and remains persistent. He does not give up; even when it appears there is no chance he could win. This persistence is the same persistence that we should have throughout our lives. We should set our goals and priorities, and work to attain them, no matter the difficulties along the way. The Hare on the other hand, displays a great amount of arrogance. Not for a moment does he even consider the possibility of losing to the tortoise. He goes so far as to take a nap to show how much time he has, and how dreadfully slow the tortoise is moving. However, his plan backfires; the tortoise passes him while he is asleep. The hares arrogance and ego allow him to lose this race. Like all of us sometimes, he forgot that he should be humble and focus on what his goal is. He was distracted by the fact that the tortoise could never be faster than him. However, he forgot that maybe the tortoise knows what he wants to do and will be persistent. We too should strive to think not about ourselves and our ego, but focus on what matters most to us.
