Data gathered during an accident investigation falls into two categories: narrative and coded. Narrative data provides direct feedback in the form of a summary of events and findings and recommendations. This data is used to identify the primary cause of accident, contributing factors to an accident, factors not contributing but increasing the severity of damage or injuries, and factors not contributing but if left uncorrected could cause an accident in the future. Coded data provides information that is used to profile statistics and trends. The Guide to Accident Investigation and Reporting Procedures provides Safety Managers with step by step instructions in collecting accident data, analyzing and processing accident date, reporting findings and recommendations, and recording data for trend analysis purposes.
