WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Computing and Communications Services (CCS), Carleton U. – Spring 2004
    • Job Title: Web Content Editor (Co-op)
    • Duties: Managed CCS website (http://www.carleton.ca/ccs).Added several useful new features and improved standards-compliance & accessibility; created database-driven System Status page and Announcements page using Access, SQL, VBScript, & ASP; quickly created easy-to-use VB applications to simplify site/database updates by other CCS employees; organized and ran Web Team meetings; Edited spelling, grammar, and writing style throughout the site.
  • Professor John W. Chinneck, Dept. of Systems and Computer Eng., Carleton U. – Summer 2002 & Summer 2003
    • Job Title: Programmer/Analyst (Co-op)
    • Duties: Worked on five main projects using Visual Basic 6.0/.NET and some Perl and C:
    • MProbe is a program that aids in solving/analyzing complicated systems of equations.
    • MPSFileReader & GAMSFileReader are DLLs used to read in a file containing a model of a mathematical system to be solved/maximized/minimized and communicate it to another program (such as MProbe).
    • The Downloads Webpage is a webpage form with a Perl script that collects volunteered user information.
    • New MProbe Samping Methods improving the randomness of variable-space sampling in MProbe, since I discovered that the sampling wasn't properly random.
    • I expanded on the existing capabilities of MPSFileReader, adding a GUI and the ability to create, edit, and write MPS files. GAMSFileReader, I completed from scratch in summer 2003. Great care was taken to ensure that it would be easy for future programmers to work with the code, if needed. I take pride in the readability of my code.
    • My main accomplishments with MProbe were the addition of the ability for MProbe to use MPSFileReader and GAMSFileReader, and the addition of an important new window (the "Points Workshop"). I also discovered several important bugs, one of which I had to analyze, write a report about, suggest a solution for, and give a presentation on. The main discovery was that the random sampling points were not evenly distributed (a somewhat significant algorithm bug that went unnoticed for years); I developed and incorporated new, more random, sampling methods into MProbe (which might be in the version after 5.0).
    • I also wrote daily reports on my work and progress.

OTHER INTERESTS AND HOBBIES

  • Programming interesting and useful applications (www.geocities.com/smozoma/programming/)
    • My customized version of VirtualDub is somewhat popular
  • Playing various sports, table hockey, and Sega NHL '94
  • Keeping up with technology and science news
  • Working on my website
  • Japanese Animation
  • Online comic strips
