Welcome

I have received several e-mails lately with questions about the station and its promotion.  That indicates to me that people are finding this page!  I would like to stress again that this page is a personal production of me, a lowly little smooth jazz fan; it is not directly connected to the station, nor am I.  I built this page to give KJZS a presence on the web so that visitors to the area and others who don't know about the station would be able to find and enjoy it.  I have been terribly remiss for some time in updating this page, but now that I know it is getting attention I will strive to keep the content more up-to-date for the benefit of you who are visiting here!

About Smooth Jazz 92.1

Like a gift for the new millenium, during the late spring of 2000 NextMedia Group II, Inc. addressed a long standing need of radio listeners in Northwestern Nevada by bringing smooth jazz to the region's airwaves. From Acoustic Alchemy to the Yellowjackets,  92.1 KJZS brings to listeners the latest in contemporary jazz along with classic favorites.

Smooth Jazz 92.1 is also available to listeners in Nevada's capital city, Carson City, on 102.3 FM!

Q & A

I recently received an e-mail from a listener in Carson City.  Unfortunately, it appears I deleted it from my inbox before answering it.  So, I'll put the reply up here and hope the sender finds it.  Sorry!

RE: Reception in Carson City

The 102.3 frequency in Carson City is a translator that repeats the signal from the main transmitter north of Reno.  It runs only 2 watts of output power or 10 watts of output power maximum, depending on which FCC regulations were in effect at the time it was licensed.  This is very low power for an FM broadcast transmitter, making the signal susceptable to many factors affecting radio signals.  If you are in a location where there is any terrain obstructing the line of sight between you and the translator, this would explain the weak signal.

Also note that under current FCC regulations, radio stations themselves cannot operate translators.  It is therefore likely that the one rebroadcasting KJZS in Carson City is operated by a tax-supported general improvement district (nee, Television District) authorized under Nevada law for the purpose of operating equipment that boosts reception of broadcast signals in less populated areas without their own local broadcasts.

The main transmitter for KJZS is located on a hilltop approximately 5 miles north of downtown Reno.  It runs 1,000 watts; although this is also fairly low in comparison to what many other stations run, this combination of power and location throws out a signal that can be received fairly well anywhere within the low lying areas between the North Valleys north of the Reno/Sparks area down to the Carson City area.  Hopefully, one of the two signals is sufficient to provide you with good reception!
