| Emissions controls in California A new method that analyzes the effect of emissions controls on visibility was applied to conditions in Claremont, CA. Claremont has a severe smog problem and therefore was an ample location to test the new analytical method. First, some background on the visibility impairment caused by smog: * Visibility impairment looks like either a brown discoloration at the horizon or a nearly opaque white haze. * Light scattering and absorption by airborne particles, as well as light absorption by nitrogen dioxide (NO2) cause visibility impairment. |
