It is formed when nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbon vapors, emitted primarily from the automobile exhaust undergo photochemical reactions in the troposphere to form various irritants.

The hazy appearance is due to the presence of small particulate matter and small liquid droplets in the form of aerosols. Its yellow-brownish color is due to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which has a light brown color.
