| A MAJOR VICTORY FOR THE EPA! | ||||||
March 26, 2002 A federal appeals court dismissed the final challenges to a 1997 clean air rule aimed at reducing smog and soot pollution throughout the nation. Conservation groups are hailing the decision. Thumbs up to the Bush administration! Since 1997, the EPA has been prevented from implementing the rules due to the challenging auto industry and 3 states. the rule sets a standard specifically for fine particles equal to, or smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter. The sources of these particles include diesel trucks and power plants. Needless to say, Industry was not happy with the decision. Their short term profits may be decreased due to extra costs for implementing green technology. The EPA should have based the standards on a cost benefit analysis, rather than on the impact of pollution on public health. -Industry However, in the long run, Industry's profits will return to equilibrium. This is a significant step in the prevention of smog, with only short-run inconveniences to Industry. This is a huge victory for breathers -Clean Air Trust |
