Headline of Episode:
A new mutant has surfaced. She's a danger to herself and everyone else. Can the X-men save her, or will Mystique's shapeshifting prevent this girl from figuring out the truth? Also, Kitty still hasn't gotten used to Kurt, he looks like a demon, but pointy ears are kind of cute, aren't they?
Summary:
The episode opens with a pan to a house on a lake, obviously somewhere in the south. Music can be heard. A lone girl (Rogue) is seen standing out on the balcony over looking the lake. Two boys walk out, one blonde, one brunette; theyre both wearing letterman jackets. Body snatcher the brunette boy says, Thats the only explanation.
The blonde haired boy catches sight of the aforementioned girl and his buddy notices. He teases him, My good buddy Cody is now a pod person. Gone in an evening from bad to sad, from flame to lame. Nurse! Hes coded, personality pads stat! Cody jerks away from his friend, Aw come on, Im just picking my moment, takin it slow.
He friend riles him back, Cody Ive seen glaciers that move faster. There she is, the girl youve been staring at all week. At least tell me you know her name. Cody shrugs. The boy hits himself in the head, You lame-O! This ends now he grabs Cody and shoves him in the girls direction. She notices his noise and turns to face him. Can I help you? she asks.
Dance?! Would you like to? With me that is. He asks (meanwhile his friend is in the background obviously embarrassed for his buddy.)
Rogue turns him down saying that shes really just hanging out, but once she notices the dejected look on Codys face she softens a bit and says Aw hey, why not, wheres the harm in one dance? The three file inside and the scene changes to a blind woman getting a vision of Rogue and the boy about to touch. She seems really upset by the vision.
The scene changes back to the party. Rogue and Cody are dancing and Codys friend gives him a little push saying, Get closer, make your move! Apparently the shove was too hard as Cody felt right on top of Rogue. Getting up he apologizes and tries to help her up. He grabs her by the bare wrist and as his hand touches her skin something happens. Flashes of Codys life seem to be absorbed into the girls mind. She jerks away from him and he collapses. Ugh, these images in my head. Whats happening to me? What am I? Who am I? she asks
Intro
People crowd around the unconscious Cody. His friend shakes him and when Cody doesnt get up he asks Rogue What did you do to him?! She runs for the door but the friend stands in her way. A flash of Cody doing a football maneuver goes through her head and she uses the move to knock the boy out of the way. Hes stunned that she was so strong and says, I thought only Cody had moves like that.
The scene changes and the blind woman (Destiny/Irene) is talking on the phone saying that she sees pathways, probabilities. She tells the person on the phone that she knew what form Rogues powers would take, not when they would manifest. She tells the person on the phone that she took precautions with her, a phony skin condition and the way she was dressed were mentioned. The person on the phone indicates that theyre coming and the blind woman says that the others, Xaviers team, theyre coming too.
Scene cuts to the Xavier Institute. A man dressed like ninja is crawling through the air vents. As he starts to come out Storm is about to fry him with electricity. He crawls back into the air vent. Storm counters his move by creating a rain cloud outside and funnels the rain through the chimney and into the air vents. The rain washes the ninja into the Danger Room. He starts to get up and she blasts him with ice. He breaks out and says Now that was cold. She smiles and replies, Then lets warm you up. (OMG flirty!) Storm hits the button to start up the Danger Room. One of the laser cannons comes out of the wall but before it can shoot him he jumps on top of it, extends his claws (obviously Wolverine) and rips into the machine, getting a little fried in the process. Another machine that bears a striking resemblance to a blender pops out of the floor. He ducks under the blender thing and rips out the side paneling. Xaviers voice rings out, STOP! That is, for now, all that we can afford.
Wolverine takes off his mask and smiles, When I give a demo, I give a demo.
Is that demo as in demolish or demonstration? Scott asks over the PA system. He then turns to Storm and asks what the point was. She replies that it was to find the weaknesses in sophisticated security systems. Jean, Kitty, and Kurt are also there (Kurt is hanging upside from the ceiling with a bowl of popcorn balanced on his legs.) As Wolverine joins the group Kurt tells him that it was really cool and that he gives it two thumbs up (but he is currently upside down, so the thumbs are also upside down.)
Wolverine ignores him and focuses on the video of his run. He mentions that it was pretty easy to get in and that they should install poison gas sprayers (yeah good idea Wolverine, put poison gas sprayers in the VENTALATION SYSTEMdork). After Storm gives him a look he lets up and says that it could be knock out gas.
Kitty is sitting off to the side and she shivers, asking if anyone else is freaked out by this. Everyone simply looks at her. Oh, right, its just megreat. She says sarcastically.
Relax Kitty, Kurt says teleporting next to her, Were right here beside you. He teleports to the other side of her, Popcorn? She shrieks and the look on her face is more than a little freaked. Kurt easily notices, Oh, sorry. Next time Ill honk before I port. She doesnt look convinced and tells everyone because its late shes going to drop out. She phases herself down through the floor and Kurt watches her sadly as she goes. He makes a comment that shes not fully into the fuzzy dude. Jean tries to make him feel better by telling him that shell come around. Just then Xavier rolls in and tells Scott to assemble the whole team and suit up. When Scott asks whats going on the Prof. tells them that Cerebro detected a mutant in Caldecott county, Mississippi. He says that the girl is a danger to herself and those around her. X-men, we have a Rogue.
The X-men fly off in the Blackbird and Kurt is flying (the plane that is). Scott congratulates him and tells him that hell make a pretty good pilot. Kurt replies, Thanks and leans back to steer with his feet. Or maybe not Scott adds.
Scott makes some comments to Xavier about their flight plan while the girls watch. Kitty makes a comment to Jean that he seems like, so together, so cooland hes kind of cute.
Jean seems surprised, Cute? Stiff maybe, exacting definitely, but cute? Well from a certain angle.
Kurt notices the way Kitty is looking at Scott and decides he needs to do something to impress her. He teleports outside the plane and stands on the nose. He smiles, but soon the wind is too much and he loses his balance. He hurtles toward the windshield only to teleport back inside the cabin just in time. The only problem is that hes still in midair and he tumbles upside right into Kittys lap. She screams and Prof. tells him to knock it off because hes scaring Kitty. He apologizes to her, but she seems really disturbed and tells him to stay away from her.
The scene cuts to the airport and Raven Darkholme steps out. She slides into a limo next to Destiny. Destiny comments that she made good time, and Raven tells her that their mysterious founder has certain resources.
What happened? Raven asks as she shapeshifts into Mystique. I left the girl in what I thought were your capable hands.
Irene explains that she went to the school dance where her powers manifested and she made contact with a local boy.
Absorbing his memories and physical abilities, wonderful. We hide her away in this backwater town for the better part of 5 years and in 5 minutes it all falls apart. We cant lose her! Not to Xavier. She possesses the potential for limitless power. You can see the future Irene, where will she go?
Home, or at least what she thinks is home.
The scene cuts to Rogue outside a house that through flashes in her mind we know its Codys. She gets a key from over the door and goes inside.
The scene cuts to the X-men outside a hospital. Wolverine asks if its necessary and Scott says that Xavier cant get a lock on the girls mind. He sends in Jean (as a nurse) to get a fix on Codys brainwaves.
The scene cuts to the house again, and the car that Destiny and Mystique are in pulls up. Mystique starts to get out and Destiny stops her. You wont hurt her will you? After all Raven, shes your
Mystique interrupts her and says that the girl will come willingly, given the right incentive. As she says this she transforms into Wolverine.
Mean while Rogue is sitting in Codys room looking a scrap book. Shes confused because she doesnt know which me she is. Shes not sure whether shes Rogue, or Cody. Just then Wolverine (whos actually Mystique) busts in the room and attacks Rogue. Rogue asks what he wants and he says that he wants her. Rogue hits him with a broken piece of wood and runs out and down the stairs as he lets out an over the top howl. Wolverine follows and as she/he jumps down from the stairs she/he transforms into Storm.
Meanwhile, the Wolverine, Kitty and Kurt are looking for Rogue in a dumpster/alleyway. Wolverine mentions that the Prof. still cant quite pinpoint her because shes so confused. Wolverine says that he smells fear.
Storm is chasing after Rogue and she throws a little ball that lets out a lighting explosion just as Rogue hops over a fence. Rogue tumbles on the ground and comes to a stop at Destinys feet. Destiny tells her that she has to come with her because she knows someone that can help. She also tells Rogue that the X-men are the ones that have been chasing her and that theyre mutant hunters. Rogue takes Destinys hand, but Wolverine walks up just then. She sees him and completely freaks. She runs, but her glove is still in Destinys hand. Wolverine and the others start to pursue her. After a moment Kurt stops Wolverine and explains that for some reason she freaked out. He says that itd probably be best if he tried to talk to her. Wolverine allows it but tells him to put on your best face. And to look after the half-pint. (meaning Kitty) Kitty takes offence with the fact that Wolverine doesnt think she can take care of herself.
Rogue has hopped the fence into a garden and Kurt teleports into a swing in the yard. Guten tag Frauline. Dont be frightened. She seems surprised by him. He teleports to a birdbath next to her and she asks what he wants. To help you. He responds. Were the good guys, especially me. Kitty phases through the fence to see the two talking. Kurt says, I was like you once. Alone, unsure of what I was. Afraid to show my face. He strokes his hair, Can you believe it?
Kitty is still miffed about the half-pint comment and decides to show Wolverine. She doesnt think that Rogue looks that tough and she tackles her. Rogue still has Codys abilities and apparently Cody was on the wrestling team. She easily knocks Kitty off and starts to run, but Kurt grabs her by the shoulders to keep her from bolting. Rogue struggles with him and hits his wrist. She happens to hit his image inducer and it clicks off revealing the true blue fuzzy dude. Naturally she freaks and tries to shove him away, only she does it with her bare hand on his face. The touch knocks him to the ground and she stumbles backwards and teleports away. Kitty freaks out as Kurt falls to the ground. She calls his name but he is unconscious.
Meanwhile Rogue has teleported to a cemetery. Shes a little confused at first and actually says I can speak German? IN GERMAN. Then shes so stunned she asks herself the same question in English. She begins to realize that she absorbed his abilities just like she did Cody. She tries to teleport again and is successful. She continues to teleport a few more times, after a while starting to smile at her new ability. Suddenly the bench she teleports onto breaks and she wonders when this whole thing is going to end.
Back to Kurt and Kitty again, Kitty his holding his hand begging him to get up and say something to her (even scare her). When he doesnt wake up she tries to think calmly asking herself What would Wolverine do? Other than dice up like half the landscape? She remembers that the Prof. can read minds so she starts thinking really loudly to him.
The Prof. is meanwhile realizing that he cant read Cody/Rogues brainwaves anymore. Hes interrupted by Kittys voice screaming in his head telling him that Rogue did something to him. The Prof. tells Wolverine to go help her and tries to find Kurt/Rogues brainwave patterns. He picks the signal up easily and tells Jean, Scott and Storm to go ahead, and that hell guide them to her.
Back in the cemetery Mystique is about to approach Rogue, but Jean walks up. Rogue recognizes her from Kurts memories, but when she realizes that shes an X-man she almost bolts because of her earlier experience with Mystique disguised as Wolverine and Storm. Jean tells her that she knows what shes going through and that shes not going to hurt her. She tells Rogue that its tough to go it alone and she gives her a stick thingy that she calls a communicator telling her that she can call her anytime. Right then Scott and Storm walk up and when Rogue sees Storm she totally freaks. She runs and Scott tries to follow and he falls on his face. They realize that Storm must have freaked her out for some reason. Mystique, whos been listening to the whole thing seems to come up with a plan.
Meanwhile Kitty is still upset that Kurt is unconscious. His head is laying in her lap and shes talking to him saying, Kurt wake up! You know Im still not really big on facial hair, but the pointy ears are starting to work for me.
Rogue is hiding in the mausoleum terrified. Mystique disguised as Scott jumps through the roof and threatens her. She runs outside and slams into the real Scott. Freaked out she shoves him away and his visor shoots some power lines. In efforts to escape him, she runs back in the mausoleum and by then Mystique has transformed into Jean. She appears angry and yells at Rogue that she tried to help her, but that some people cant be helped. Rogue freaks out some more and teleports in the air above the cemetery. Realizing that shes falling she teleports a little closer to the ground and falls. The real Jean rushes to her asking if shes all right. Still scared Rogue crawls away backwards from Jean, only to have Storm come up behind her. Storm asks her whats wrong and tells her that theyre her friends. Just as Storm reaches to help her, Rogue touches the bare skin of Storms arm and absorbs her powers. Storm is knocked away and Scott runs up asking whats going on only to realize that Rogue has Storms powers. Rogue rises into the air, storm clouds and lighting swirl around her. Jean tries to shield her and Scott from it, but Scott tells her to give it up because Rogue doesnt have the control that Storm does. A lighting bolt hits one of the power lines and Scott realizes that Storm is lying in a pool of water below the lines. He runs and picks Storm up. Jean struggles to lift the three of them out of the water using her telekinesis. Just as theyre in the air the power lines fall into the water. Jean realizes that she wont be able to hold them up that long. A few yards away Rogue is having problems of her own. She realizes that she bit off more that she could chew with Storms powers. Too much powerI cant control it, I have to she interrupts herself by teleporting away.
With Rogue gone the rain and lighting subsides. Jean brings them down on a dry spot and the Prof., Kitty, and Wolverine (carrying an unconscious Kurt) walk up. Scott asks the Prof. if he knows what happened to the Rogue. He says that he cant trace her mind because its so jumbled, but he believes someone else was responsible for the trouble they encountered. Wolverine sniffs the air and detects that Mystique was there. Kitty chimes up that they have to go after Mystique, but the Prof says that they cant force the girl to come with them and that they have to tend to their own first. Storm and Kurt are starting to come around. Kurt mentions that he must have missed quite a party. Kitty bounds up to Kurt looking incredibly excited, thrilled that hes ok. He starts to faint, but she catches him, saying Easy you fuzzy elf. Scott gives Kurt a surprised look and quietly mouths, Fuzzy elf? Kitty takes no notice and snuggles a little closer to Kurt.
Cody and his friend can be seen in the hospital. His friend comments that whatever it was that put him in the hospital better go away quickly because the game against Jackson was next week and he didnt want Stevens taking his position. Cody smiles and tosses a football up in the air and in the background of the hospital window you can see the X-jet flying away.
Mystique in her Principal form sits on her desk in front of Rogue at the high school. She welcomes Rogue to the high school telling her that shell be safe there. Rogue doesnt seem entirely convinced, but thanks her just the same. Rogue leaves and as the door closes you can see some paper clips on Mystiques desk floating. Magneto (in silhouette) is suddenly in the room commenting that Rogue has lots of power and is an asset to the team. Mystique transforms back into herself and agrees with him. Magneto asks if any true memories of the real x-men had faded and Mystique assures him that she doesnt remember them. Outside Mystiques office Rogue pulls out the communicator that Jean gave her back in the cemetery. She looks at it sadly.
Personal Reviews:
smm - Awesome episode. Definitely one of my favorites out of season 1. Love all of Kurt and Kittys interactions, especially the popcorn scene. Kurt hanging upside down was adorable too. I liked how after Rogue absorbed Cody she was confused as to which me am I? she wasnt sure if she was the male or the female. The only thing I wasnt crazy about was what happened to her after she teleported? Having that much power doesnt just go away after you teleport, so Im sure she was having trouble where ever she went. Just leaves a little bit of a loose end, but I can totally over look it. Great episode. I give it an A
wander - Really good episode. I liked how Destiny mentioned that they pretended that Rogue had a skin condition to explain the way she dressed. All the interaction between Kitty and Kurt was fantastic too because it showed a lot of depth by showing that not everybody on the X-men team was actually comfortable with how Kurt looked. The fact that he won her over in end was sweet, but I sort of wish it would have been because of something he actually did, instead of just getting hurt. Though the fact that while he was unconsicous and she mentioned Im still not fond of facial hair, but the pointy ears are starting to work for me. Was a really nice touch that showed, she wasnt just suddenly fine with everything. I loved the fact that Irene foreshadowed Mystiques relationship with Rogue.
The only part of the episode I really found to be hard to deal with was Rogues name. Yeah, I understand she didnt have a name in the comics and I wouldnt have wanted her to have a name here either, but they just handled the whole situation strangely. Like Prof. says that shes a rogue, so then they start calling her that and even Irene calls her that. Its just a little strange for me. I think it would have went more smoothly if they would have just called her Rogue like her name instead of referring to her like a rogue mutant. I give it an A.
Other Viewer's gave this episode a(n) : A-
