Summary:

A girl (Kitty) is lying in bed having a dream about flying through the city. Suddenly she begins falling and when she wakes up shes in her basement. Shes obviously scared and her parents come down to comfort her. They ask her if she was sleep walking and she tells them that she fell through the ceiling. Her mother tells her it was just a dream but her father looks up and realizes that his daughters pillow and blanket are half phased through the ceiling. Kitty is terrified and says What am I? Whats happening to me?! Cerebro detects her mutant signature (the second detection in that region). The computer gives off Kittys statistics. Her name is Kitty Pryde, age 15, living in Northbrook, Illinois. Prof. X tells someone to prep the blackbird.  Kurt is late for class and is stopped by Ms. Darkholme (Mystique). Scott saves him from a scolding by dragging him off to class.  Meanwhile Kitty is trying to sneak out to go to school (weirdo). Her mother tries to stop her, apparently her parents thought she should stay home after what happened. Kitty doesnt want to stay cooped up with parents that dont want to talk about it, so she eventually convinces her mom to let her go. Prof. X is flying Jean to Kittys location. He tries to convince her that she can get through to Kitty. Jean mentions that theres another kid in the location that needs their help. His name is Lance Alvers, a kid in a foster home. Prof. X says that hell take care of Lance, as long as Jean takes care of Kittys parents. At Kittys house Prof. X and Jean try to convince her family to let Kitty come with them. Prof. X wants to talk inside, but Kittys father insists on talking outside. Prof. X scares the parents by asking them what happened last night. Mr. Pryde retaliates that Last night is none of your business! Just leave us alone. With that said, they slam the door in Prof. X and Jeans faces. Back at the mansion Logan is cleaning his bike when he smells Sabertooth. He suits up and rides off in a hurry. Curious, Kurt and Scott follow him in Scotts really cool sports car. At Kittys school two girls notice that Kitty is sulking. They figure its because shes dreading PE (the only class shes not acing). They decide to give her a little time off and lock her in her locker. They run off as Kitty bangs on the door, demanding to be let out. A boy walks out of the boys room and begins to spray paint the lockers red. Kitty hears him and bangs on the door for him to let her out. Just as hes passing her locker she phases through the door. The boy is surprised, telling her that shes just like him. He quickly shows her that he can make the earth shake and she freaks out calling him a freak and runs away. Lance makes a dopey rock pun.  Kitty reports for PE and the teacher tells her she has to go first in the long jump because she was late. On a near by rooftop of one of the school buildings Lance and two guys try to find a way of breaking in to get test answers. Lance tells his buddies that hes going to use Kitty to get in. Lances friend Griff makes a snide remark and Lance intimidates him into submission by shaking things up a bit. Kitty is trying to do the long jump, but trips and falls. Annoyed she hits the sand. The two girls from earlier mock her and the girl named Riley gets ready to do the long jump. Just as shes about to jump Lance makes a sand geyser that plants her on her butt. Kitty realizing who it was freaks out and runs away, only to run into Jean. Kitty hides out in the School Theater. Kitty kicks a chair and starts to sit on a table only to make it fall over and as she tries to catch a bowl thats falling , it phases through her hands. Shes a little freaked at first. She kneels down and taps the top of the bowl, its solid. She starts to concentrate and is able to phase her hand through the bowl. Jean comes in and calls her name. She wants to make sure that Kittys okay. Jean tells her that she understands what shes going through but Kitty resists. Kitty yells at her, saying that she didnt want this curse, Its hard enough just being normal, you know!? Jean tries to convince her its okay by showing her that shes telekinetic. Kitty thinks its a trick and then Jean wonderfully screws up the situation by telling her that she can read minds. Kitty freaks out again and runs off. Lance tells Jean to stay away from Kitty that hell be teaching her whats what. Lance talks to Kitty outside her locker. Shes really defensive at first, but after a minute he convinces her that he knows how she feels. He tells her that she can take control and he can show her how if shell meet him outside the office in an hour. Prof. X tells Jean not to give up on Kitty. Back in Bayville Scott and Kurt are cruising around in his car. Kurts annoyed because they cant find Wolverine anymore. Just then Kurt points up to Logan standing on a roof of a parking garage. Wolverine and Sabertooth finally meet up. Sabertooth rides by Wolverine and Wolverine slices off the front tire. Sabertooth and his motorcycle head over the edge of the building and the bike lands on Scotts car, lucky for him Kurt ported them both to safety. Wolverine and Sabertooth fight in the garage. Sabertooth shoves cars up through the ceiling and when Logan falls through the floor he pins him to a wall with a car. Scott and Kurt pop in wearing their X Uniforms and Scott blasts Sabertooth away from Logan. Kurt tries to take Sabertooth down only to bounce right off him. Logan on the other hand jumps right into Sabertooth and the two slide into an elevator. Sabertooth kicks Logan off of him and the elevator closes and goes down. Wolverine slices the doors away to hear Sabertooth say A taste of things to come Wolverine! Kurt pops up behind Logan and says We showed him! Were the X-Men!. Wolverine looks at him rather annoyed, I dont fight your battles, so dont fight mine. Wolverine walks off.  Meanwhile, Kitty shows up outside the office to meet Lance. She asks him how to take control. He replies that she has to admit that theyre different, that theyre outsiders. He says that Fate dealt us winning cards, if we play them together. Kitty says that nothing is making any sense. Lance says that hes there to help her. He convinces her to phase through the wall into the office and when she does she lets him in. Shes thrilled to realize that she can control her ability. Lance gives her a hug telling her that nothing can own her.  Outside Prof. X, Jean, and Kittys parents meet. Jean (whos wearing her X Uniform) tells them that shes breaking into the office. Jean and Kittys parents take off to the office while Prof. X catches up. Meanwhile, Lance hacks into the computer, and steals the test answers. Kitty is a little put off by the whole thing and Lance decides to modify some grades. Before he can she tries to convince him to leave with her. She starts to leave, but he grabs her by the arm. Her father rushes in, but Lance uses his powers to make a bookcase fall on him. Lance tries to lead Kitty out of the office by making a door, but Kittys parents apologize to her for trying to pretend nothing was wrong. Kitty is starting to be convinced by her parents. Lance starts to bring the whole place down and Jean tells Kitty that if she leaves with Lance her gift will be a curse. Jean is keeping the rocks and debris from falling on them by using her powers. Lance tries to drag Kitty out, but she phases her arm out of his grip. Hes really ticked off now and makes a huge pile of debris fall on Kitty. Hes a little afraid of what he did and runs off. The building crumbles just as Prof. X rolls up. He contacts Jean telepathically and reminds her that she needs to keep up her little force field by keeping her mind clear. She worried about Kitty though. Suddenly Kitty phases out of the debris and tells everyone to hold onto her. She safely phases everyone out of the building. And in the end she tells her father that she wants to go with the X-men because they can help her.  Lance is standing off to the side watching the mayhem and Mystique comes up to him and tells him that he can come with her.

Personal Reviews:

smm - This was a sweet episode. I really loved Kitty's lines. They were just perfect. They really embodied the spirit of X-Men "It's hard enough just to be normal!" Lance was an interesting character and I rather liked how he had a sort of resiliant spirit. You could see that he had it hard and that he knew that he was going to have to depend on himself if he wanted to make it. Resiliance is the mark of a good villian. If you really think about it, how would our heroes save the world from villians if the villians just gave up? This episode was pretty sweet and had some great lines, I give it a B+

wander - I wish we could have seen a sweeter side of Lance in this episode. We all know that in future episodes he isn't as bad as he seems and I would have liked to see a little foreshadowing. The only other main complaint I had against this episode was that I didn't like that they didn't tell us anything about what was going on with Lance. I did some research on line and found out that Lance was supposed to in foster care and when Xavier was outside that building with the stairs he was actually trying to get custody of Lance. So we find out that he was trying to recruit Lance, its just too bad that we never really got to see that bit. It was a nice second episode so I give it a B.

Other Viewer's gave this episode a(n) : B+
