Summary:
The opening episode for X-Men: Evolution starts out with a bang as the viewer is thrown into Bayville High School. There we meet the first X-Men, Scott and Jean. We also meet our first villians, Toad, a mutant teen with less than perfect hygiene and Mystique a seductive shape shifter that is posing as the high school's principal. The episode opens at a football game. Scott notices that Toad is going to get beaten up by Duncan Matthews the school's quarterback for pick pocketing. In attempts to try and stop him Scott's glasses fall off and out of his eyes shoots a powerful beam that hits a propane tank and causes a massive explosion. The Professor, a telepathic millionaire that owns the mansion where Scott and Jean reside, keeps the lid on things by altering the perceptions of a cop that almost came to the conclusion of what really happened. After the ruckus of the game settles down Prof. X and his weather altering protg, Storm go to the train station to pick up a rather unusual young man. Kurt Wagner is taken back to the institute to be introduced to Scott and Jean. Upon his introduction we find out that he's got blue fur, pointed ears, yellow eyes, a tail and has the unique gift of teleportation. While Scott and Jean were a little surprised at his appearance they seemed to forget about him temporarily because the Professor began to scold Scott for being reckless at the game. Shortly afterwards, Kurt is given a device called a holo-watch (or image inducer) to make him look like everyone else, needless to say, Kurt was thrilled. In this episode we also meet Wolverine who we find out later has metal claws that he can pop out of his knuckles. Sabertooth is also pictured, but all he does is growl momentarily as he watches Wolverine from afar. Meanwhile, Toad is given orders by Mystique to spy on Scott Summers and find out more about them. Scott mentions Toad's possibility of being a mutant to the Professor and the Professor suggests that Toad should come in for an audition. Around this time we find out about Cerebro, a computer that Prof. X can use to detect mutants. Toad comes to the Mansion that night to spyor audition, depending on what side you're on. While traipsing around in attempts of gathering info, Storm drives him inside and he meets Kurt, who he takes an instant disliking to. The two jump and pop around the mansion in several random little fights. Eventually Prof. X says that Toad is a mutant and he's able to join the institute if he'd like, but Toad ignores him and continues to fight with Kurt. Kurt pops them into a place called the Danger Room, which promptly attacks them. Scott and Jean come in and save the two boys, but Toad is too freaked out to even consider staying as an X-man. Kurt feels responsible and tells the Professor that he doesn't deserve their hospitality. After a little while, Scott finds him and they come to a mutual understanding that everyone makes mistakes and its okay, but you should learn from them and try to do better. Meanwhile, Toad gets scolded by Mystique for having his mind wiped by Prof. X. She seems really angry and she yells at him to leave, suddenly, and ominously, a dark figure tells her not to go so hard on Toad, that they don't want to thin their ranks. Mystique seems afraid of him and he reminds her that "this is only the beginning"

Personal Reviews:
smm - I rather liked this episode. It's a lot stronger than other series openers I've seen. It was eye catching and it popped you into the X-Men universe fairly nicely. It had references and stayed closely to the main X-Men story so that most comic readers could smile at it and it made enough sense so new viewers that'd never seen X-men could get it. This episode set up a few relationships without being too obvious. Relationships like Wolverine/Sabertooth and Magneto/Mystique, it left enough mystery to make you want to see the next episode, but it resolved enough so that you weren't annoyed for being left with unanswered questions. I think for the most part the episode was enough to spark some interest in the series, but it wasn't quite strong enough to leave me breathless. I'd give it a B+
wander - It was a good opener, and I have to agree with a lot of what smm said, I give it a B.
Other Viewer's gave this episode a(n) : A+ or A-
