Three

The blaring wind and freezing snow ended at the walls of the Kent house. Inside the air was warm and soothing, perfect atmosphere for frightened girls to fall asleep in. Upstairs in Clark 's room, Lana drifted in and out of sleep, with the storm constantly in the back of her mind.

It wasn't that she was scared anymore, well, it was, but it wasn't the entire reason. Confusion ran through her head, into her dreams and out of her mouth. Waking up time after time gasping for air and realizing, it was just a dream.

But it seemed so real! Yet, as a dream should seem, she could not explain or understand it. As dreams went, this was normal. She tried her hardest to roll over and fall back asleep. SHe would pull the comforter tight to her chin and breathe in the soft smell of her pillow. It was a fresh pillow, right out of the closet with a fresh pillow case, but it still had Clark 's smell embedded into it. FOr that reason, she dug her face further into the pillow and tried to block out the picture of the snow pounding against the window.

Smelling Clark in his pillow was about as low as she could go, she thought. They had been through so much and she still was trying harder and harder to get back to where they were a couple months ago. Even if they never could, or never would, she wanted their friendship to become a better one, one that was closer. If they couldn't be involved romantically, then she wished they could at least have a deeper friendship. Was that even possible with Clark ?

Chloe didn't seem to have problems with him, other than that one time at the one place with the one guy, or the other place at the other time, but other than that, their friendship seemed to last through more than Clark's and her own. What did Chloe do differently than she did?

Nothing was working, her head was spinning with thoughts and wasn't seeming to let her fall back to sleep. Reluctantly, she pushed the covers off her body and sswung her feet onto the surprisngly warm floor. The carpeting seemed to run with a warmth that swept through the soles of her feet all the way through her body. Before standing up, she paused to giggle at her pajama bottoms. Spongebob always made her laugh.

She stood up and slowly crept to the door, which was cracked open rather than shut completely. For the best, she thought. What if she suddenly needed to run to the bathroom? Right now, she needed a drink of water. Hopefully it would clear her mind and let her get some rest. Nothing was guarunteed, but it was worth a shot. And maybe if she was lucky, she could get a peek at Clark sleeping.

The floorboards creaked with age as Lana tiptoed through the hall and down the stairs. It gave off the old homey, farm sound and she surprisngly found it very familiar. It was like his loft, the sounds seemed to be the same. But they didn't give her too much of a problem as she entered the kitchen.

Walking around the small island in the center of the kitchen, she made her way to the cupboards. She could hear Clark 's soft breathing from the other room. It wasn't snoring, just a very loud, yet gentle breathing. It made her scared that she would wake him, like he was on the verge of waking. She reached the cupboard and opened it up, cringing at the clinking the cups caused as she pulled one out. THen she went to the sink and filled it up, almost talking to the water to hurry up. The more she thought about water, the more she wanted to have a drink.

Finally there was enough to allow her to drink from it. SHe lifted it to her mouth and sipped. It was cold and pure and it hit the spot. Her mind and heart almost seemed to slow down and her shoulders relaxed. She sighed with satisfaction and sat the cup down on the counter next to the sink. Now she could sleep.

SHe walked slowly back to the stairs, feeling relaxed and now sleepy. As she put her foot on the first step she heard something strange, like someone talking.

"Nuish msilachi hsuns eaptin marakoon..." it was soft, and she strained to hear more. It was coming from the living room, and Lana automatically assumed it was Clark . Despite herself, she found herself walking away from the stairs and into the living room. She stepped down onto the floor of the living room, down the step that divided the kitchen and the larger room. Then she heard it again. "Eaptin hssinei optamouloimi grandano, smock eebin lifska. Jor-el hsuchm oklineg eaptin."

SHe paused right behind the couch, she could see Clark now. He was jittering slightly, with his back to her and his face semi-buried in his pillow. SHe wanted to believe it was just jibberish, but what he was saying was clear, like he was speaking a different language. SHould she wake him?

"Miestru notein la husa de El. Notein eaptin hsun, opineg nuish mininio!" Clark turned in his sleep, bringing a hand to his face and wiping the sweat from his brow, subconsciously. This startled Lana and she stumbled backwards, finally falling onto the ground behind the couch. Her land made a loud thump and she slid into the cabinet behind her, making a jarring sound echo throughout the room.

"Jor-El NO!" Clark screamed. He sat up on the couch and Lana heard him breathing heavily. He gasped for breath for a moment, and she dared not make a sound. He glanced towards his parents door, the light didn't go on, so he sighed and wiped his face with his hand, then laid back down on his pillow.

Soon, his breathing became steady, and Lana knew he had fallen back to sleep. She picked herself up off the floor and crept back to the couch. Bending over, she saw Clark lying peacefully on his back, eyes shut and the blanket tucked right up under his chin. He looked so adorable laying there, she couldn't bare to wake him now.

Maybe she would just have to keep this a secret. She couldn't explain it and she was scared to ask him about it. Maybe sometime in the future, she would get up the guts to ask him about it.

She walked back towards the stairs, taking one last glance at the sleeping Clark . Confused, she turned away and walked up the stairs. It was going to be a sleepless night.
