THE WRONG WAY HOME
[All the best lines stolen from George Geiger with the best of motives, obviously!]
~~
Todays epi? Whats on the cards? We are in North Africa Looks like its hot and dry out here In a place called Estoccia
Theres starving people in camps here Evry day facing a drought Emergency aid is flown in With supplies to help them out
Its night outside a big building A full moon shines overhead By a camp fire a man walks by Wonder what it was that led
This western man to arrive here And in his hand, a briefcase Does his face seem familiar? Wow my spy skills, they are ace!
Not from Murder Between Friends though For this time he is Joe King He is known by the guard outside Dominics doing his thing
Comment ca va, ce soir? he asks Tres bien, Joe replies, Vous? Hope youre impressed that Im rhyming In English and now French too?
If you dont understand, Ill help How is it going, tonight? Very well, Joe then replies. You? Now when asked you will look bright!
Il est tranquille, eh? Dom then says Thats quiet. Joe King agrees Just then a gunshot does ring out Brings Dom down onto his knees
Joe catches Dom as he falls down As a brown-suited guy flees From the office of the PM At least that is what Joe sees
Joe takes Doms gun and he runs too But why we are not sure yet As he rides off they shoot at him But miss, away he does get!
Meanwhile back at the PMs Off A guy watches the retreat A blanket held above his head I think again, him, well meet
4247 Maplewood Dotty has lost the car keys A rushes in, I have them here She blows in just like a breeze
Youre sure that I can take the car? Dotty then asks her daughter Parallel parkings not for me Her teacher hasnt taught her!
Just then, the phone rings, it is Joe Im in DC, he then says Thats great, A answers, she is pleased Then he tells her of his mess
Im in trouble, you see and they May call, to find where I am Just tell the truth, that you dont know Ill try to get from this jam
Well let me help, Amand tells Joe You cant, its too dangerous Look, Im okay, Ill be in touch Worried, As face is non-plussed
Joe King, hes with the EAO A fugitive, Billy tells Meanwhile at his desk, Lee looks up The name, does it ring a bell?
From the field, the agent reports They want King back, thats before The State funeral can take place Or else there will be uproar
Theyve closed the African airports To stop Joe King from leaving They think theyre too late, hes gone home One step ahead, hes weaving
How long do we have to find him? Francine, she asks the agent 48 hours is all I guess To watch you, a cop theyve sent
Meanwhile Lee walks to the printer Hes puzzled, whats going on? How goods the case? Francine then asks His prints, they were on the gun
A guard was killed, the agent says And rumors are abounding About Joe Kings involvement here And the US, theyre hounding
Give us reports, as long as poss To the agent, Billy speaks But get out when you have to, though Of trouble this case, it reeks
Theyll hang us out to dry, Bill said Blaming an American Lee walks over to B and F A little shocked, looks our man
What is it Scarecrow? Billy asks A little shaky, Lee sounds The name it seemed familr, right? What is it, man? Billy frowns
I checked the Central Registry Computer, at GSA Joe Kings Amandas ex-husband Was all he could find to say
Francine looks over at Billy Lee asks his boss for this case Its too bizarre to be made up Fran says, you should see her face!
An international killer As Amandas ex-husband? Well thanks for being supportive To A. We know where you stand!
Thats suspect, Francine, Billy says No favrites though, on this one If you must use Amanda, Lee Then do it, find what goes on
Billy then leaves followed by Fran The camra zooms on Lees face This case it will be serious Good job Lees assigned this case!
Amandas gone to EAO To find out whats going on Meets field counsel Darryl Prescott See if he knows where Joes gone
Five years ago we met, he says Just after Joe, he joined us Im surprised that Joe hasnt called To explain about this fuss
Whats going on? A asks again Civil disturbance where Joes Posted now, In Estoccia? He writes. That is how A knows
A looks confused, An incident? But Joe, hes just a lawyer Wed hoped youd talk him in to us We thought that if he saw ya
He could explain, whats going on To us, Prescott continued Well Joe he hasnt been in touch She hoped that hed be rescued
Were back in Arlington again Dottys there with a hosepipe The boys are riding on their bikes Offers dessert, hear the hype!
Theres apple pie, its hot, its good! Oh, yeah! the boys, they exclaim As they abandon bikes right there Oh boys! Dotty does proclaim
Across the street, Joes in a cab To watch his boys, he sits there Pretends hes lost so the driver Will forget about this fare
Amandas in Billys office Billy asks if she has heard About her ex. She says she has But that this is so absurd
Joe couldnt kill a fly, she said But Estoccia is dangrous Returned Billy; but As not phased That makes no difference, that does
So why is it he disappeared In the middle of the night? Even then A said Theres no way Agencies seek to indict
Weve thrown out all the nets for him FBI, CIA too Security taskforce also Whats left for Billy to do?
Well do all we can Amanda Amanda asks Does Lee know? He is on this assignment, now Thank you, Sir, See, Bs not slow
Lee staggers in to the foyer In Georgetown, hes carrying Four bags, white tiger-striped covers Worn out, heavily breathing
A guy then follows behind him May all your wives be pregnant! He says. Mrs Marstons puzzled What is it that he did rant?
Its a traditional greeting Back at home, but out of date As we have too many people Mrs M does tolerate
Let me intro the Inspector Hes Asham Ali Shambar Of the Royal Estoccian Police Force, wants to go far
Hes on a special assignment But only for a few days Mrs M gives him a pass then By nothing, Mrs Ms phased
Shambar is about to go up The stairs, but Lee tells him, No The Agencys downstairs, says Lee Into the lift then they go
Ah, Mr Stetson, she calls out My office, not your closet Lee oozes charm as he collects The bags, Sorry, Ill just get-
Lee takes him in to Leatherneck Hell fix you up to chase the Bad guys here in America Seems chewing gum is the key
Dont touch that, LN says to him Theyre special, youll see double Or faint backwards onto the ground Lee knows this guy is trouble
Be sure to give him everything Keep him busy, Lee signals LN says Gotcha, hes not thrilled But they are Agency pals
LN gets out a pouch of stuff To get Shambar westernised Again says Dont mess with the gum S sees the stuff, is surprised
1000 bucks American Orioles cap, credit card Restaurant tips and a book of American slang, its a start
With these hell be American Chewing gum hell also get LN wants to take a picture For Shambars ID. All set?
Shambar waves his hand at the cam Its just a superstition Thats right, about stealing your soul? Thats so, may not be fiction
Amandas in the Q Bureau What does she know? Lee asks him No more than us, is the reply So tell me, what about him?
Our friend whos from Estoccia? He is too good to be true Pretends like hes at Disneyland Hes shifty, though, Ive a clue
Up in the Q, Lees in the vault Hmm, he says, Hmm? A then asks Oh, its nothing, No, really what? To make a list he then tasks
Be as specific as you can Doctors and cleaners, you know Old apartments you remember Im getting em Its hard though
Im comparing your ES12s Joes account from yours differs So let me see, she then asks Lee Here is your file, he offers
No, not my file let me see his He pauses, hands it over But as shes reading, he then thinks How this man was her lover
Ohhh! Amand says in a high voice What? Nothing, she just replies He knows that its not nothing though To get more info, he tries
Its just this stuff is misleading It says to change I resist Im stubborn, it says, legal talk But Lee hes getting the gist
Im not a stubborn person, Lee You know that right? He hedges You know how to get what you want Shes rattled, round the edges
Well, maybe Im a bit stubborn Sometimes we didnt agree Would you care to elaborate? I dont, Lee its about me
Amanda, this time youre my case You really have to tell me I know its tough, I need the truth Amands resigned, Okay, Lee
Seventy-two was when we wed With Philip born the next year Joe also started law school then Frustrated, Lee could not bear
Joe graduated three years on The same year Jamie was born Lee interrupted, I can read His patience was getting worn
Look, tell me whats not in the file My marriage? Uh-uh Shakes head A-man-da Lee really pushes No, really, why? Amand said
Its criminal psychology Or something like that, Lee said Im trying to piece together What goes on in Joe Kings head
Now Joe is wanted for murder But what you say doesnt track You say hes happy-go-lucky Mild-mannered. Youre holding back
Look Lee, Im uncomfortable But Joes a great guy, he is Just then, a knock on the Q door Saved by the bell, Amand says
Lee points his finger then to her We do not know each other Oh says Amanda, Lee opens The door, this mans a bother
To Shambar, Lee introduces Joe Kings ex-wife Amanda They have some leads, she says Good hat As Shambar kisses her hand
DPs the bad guy, this epi Fosters the man at the top We didnt think Joed get this far But if he calls, him well stop
Joe King continues to trust you He called you, when he found out But if he calls were connected Then harder to rub him out
Murder is the manhunts focus Im keeping out of the way Said Foster. What if he comes here? Well, were quite out of the way
And if he makes it, well kill him Say he attacked me, you know How did Kings prints get on the gun? Switched the grip Oh, dear, poor Joe!
We need a contingency plan If Joes arrested, well need Leverage to use against him Theres famly, Then its agreed
Foster asks, How do we get them? The ex-wife, works in DC The firm it is called IFF Makes, government films, you see
Her two sons, they go to school here His sons, Foster sips his tea To kill him is best, however Or more elaborate, see?
Now were back in the Q Bureau Amandas giving a list Of Joes addresses before theirs I think theres none that she missed
Shambar is staring intently At something, what though, the fish? Meanwhile Amanda continues That this was over, her wish
Shambar has another saying A running man only runs In two ways, to or away from Something Of sayings, hes tons
Lee says He came straight to DC Maybe he wants something here At the EAO? says Shambar Foster? His superior?
Just then Fran comes in the Bureau Ah, salaam, she says. Whats that? Owar salikum salaam, Huh? Here my translation falls flat
Now they are talking about deer Something about caribou He replies about a gazelle Does this make some sense to you?
Fran enjoys telling Amanda That the FBI drew blank Joes not in hotels nor motels So that Amandas heart sank
No sign in hospitals either Rescue missions, morgues and jails Well thats good, so says Amanda Even though, her face, it pales
Wed better go, says Lee Stetson Fran leads Shambar from the room Lee then gives A a large cell phone She can call them, really soon
You swing by your house, Amanda Cant we lose him, she replies No we have got to contain him So that on him weve got eyes.
We must find Joe before he does Is this a regular phone? Yes Do I use it like normal? Yes, but no area code
Over at Arlington High School Prescott says hes a PI He says theres been trouble with Joe Vice Principal says, Oh, my
The VP says, Since when is this? Amands on our PTA Things with Joeve always been friendly Prescott just says, Things change, hey
He gives her his card, Please call me If you see Joe King round here Cos if he sees them theres danger Hell take them. Now, are you clear?
In Arlington, Dotty is reading Joes letters from years ago Amanda seems to have hundreds What she looks for, I dont know
Oh, Dotty, whats with the glasses? Theyre big and black, look tacky Must be when shed finished with them She then gave them to Jamie!
A says to see if the letters Are of unusual things Or of enemies that Joes made Or probs the EAO brings
If Joe calls, Mother, you ask him Where he is? Whats going on? Get him to give you his number Off to IFF, Im gone
You and that blasted film compny Making you think of your work When Joe is out there, in trouble Surely your work you could shirk
Mother, Ill be looking for Joe But IFF they will know Where I can be reached. Dont worry Itll be fine. Gotta go
Sure says Dotty, non-believing As Amanda leaves the room Id like to know how youre informed Where it comes from, and so soon
Amand pulls out of the driveway Prescott watches from his car From the house Dotty emerges Theres a phone call Amand-a!
The VPs calling to tell them A detectives been to school Dotty confirms that the police Search now for Joe, Its awful
Lee and Amanda are walking With Shambar, he fills them in The PM and a guard were killed Then there were fires and looting
No one saw Joe, said Amanda No agreed Shambar, But see The people they all seek vengeance And Joe he was seen to flee
In Estoccia, the food is scarce The land is so parched and dry But they love their Prime Minister Want vengeance for him, thats why
Just then they come to a big house Lee says, From memory lane And onto fraternity row. This is where Joe lived, back then
The owners Mrs McDonald Or McDragon, we called her Rents out her rooms to law students Thats Joes room, A points, Up there
Mrs McDonald, hello there! Bet you dont remember me? Oh, Amanda, of course I do Whats going on? then said she
Is there some off year reunion? Cos your old boyfriend was here Oh, did you ever tie the knot Ah said Amanda, unclear
Come in, she says and they follow S waves his hand at the door Lee gives him a look of disdain Wondering what it was for
Joe stayed last night, said a mix up Meant he had nowhere to stay I had the room so I let him Youre sure its Joe would you say?
S feels the bed that Joe slept in What is it youre looking for? An aura or what? she asked him Not impossible, for sure
Did Joe say where he was going? No, when I got up, hed gone Just then Lee finds something. A clue? What is that? Shambars question
What this? Its nothing, Lee tells him Just some old travelers checks Can you stay? asks Mrs Mc then Then she says something to vex
Its a shame that you cant stay here For I have stories to tell About Amanda, the old days- But A is saved by the bell
Please do not get me in trouble Will you? how Amanda pleads Stetson says someone must watch here S stays while L&A leave
I dont think Joe will go back there Shambar can stay there all day Meanwhile weve a lead to follow If youve a pencil, we may
In Dooleys, theyre by the juke box He has a pitcher of beer Thinking back to their college days Like yesterday, they are clear
Theres Ella, Basie and Goodman And The Trogs Isnt it great? I dont think theyve changed anything Since Joe and I here would wait
We had no money to speak of Here we could just play a tune You and he came here a lot then? Yeah Hope he comes again, soon
Waiting, they go sit in a booth And Lee, he pours them a beer You know your storys unfinished? Nosey arent cha? Listen here
Its not like theres a big secret When Joe left law school, he said Hed like to join the EAO Helping people to be fed
I thought the boys should be stable Not moving round year on year Country to country, all over Eventuly it was clear
You wanted to be a housewife I wanted a home, said A So I moved into Arlington And Joe then went his own way
Lee really is sympathetic His eyes tell how much he cares I guess we were separated Then, for a couple of years
Thats when we agreed to do it Life is okay, even so Lee stares at A, so intently Okays not enough for you
Just then Joe comes into Dooleys And Lee comes up with a plan For A to distract her husband While he sneaks up on the man
No she says, I must talk to him He doesnt know who you are Then I will give you a signal Do you see where their hands are?
Get your minds out of the gutter Or hot tub if you prefer As she stands her hands in his hand As she leaves he watches her
When Joe sees Amanda, he leaves Amanda glances at Lee Then she follows her ex-husband Then Shambar turns up, oh gee!
Shambar says a student saw Joe At Dooleys only last night Then asks Lee why he is here too? Thirsty, Lee smiles, hes so bright!
Lee tells him to wait at the booth And orders drinks at the bar Says theyre on his friend over there Then he exits. What a star!
Outside Lee cant see Amanda Meanwhile Joes down an alley A follows him, theres cool music Will she find him? Wait and see
Joe he hid inside a doorway Amands not fooled, did you see? Pauses so slightly when passing Carries on walking, thats key
To catch the man you are trailing Convince him that you have missed Him; then hell make an appearance Catches him then, what a twist!
Joe says Amanda, and they hug Everyones worried bout you Me, mother and Mr Prescott You know, hes from EAO
Why dont you come back to the house Thats a chance that I cant take But youre right we have to talk soon Get outta there, for petes sake!
Cos Prescotts now in the alley Spooky music can be heard Meanwhile Lees out in a back street But of A he has no word
Were in the Georgetown U Libry Joe pushes Amand along Just then she turns and she stops him Joe wait a minute, not long
You must stop running, its not safe And Prescotts not far behind Amanda, they need a fall guy And its me Hes in a bind
I told you, you shouldnt see me Its too dangrous for you here Then A hears the click of a gun Pushes Joe into the clear
Shots then ring out in the libry Outside Lee hears them and runs Into the building towards them Joes not used to all these guns
As now guiding her ex-husband Under cover of the shelves A says, Hes moving shes noticed Into her strength she now delves
Lee then arrives in the libry As arm protecting her ex More gunshots ring out around them And Lee is getting so vexed
Lee then sees Prescott as he shoots At Joe and A, over there Prescott leaves, Lee steps right out then Looking for A, cant see where
Amandas gone, so he calls her Amanda calls nervously They both are standing behind him He is surprised, is our Lee
Lee swings around as she says, Here Come on you two, while we can As they hop over the counter Joe gets the purse for Amand
Care to speculate who did it? Its those who killed the PM Employees of the EAO But A then asks him, Why them?
I caught them stealing the relief In Estoccia and elsewhere? If I believe you, Lee told him Of course we do, she does care
If I do, Lee then repeats it At his words A stares at Lee Now it is starting to make sense Joes being framed, do you see?
I guess the shooter will fall back So his next move he can plan You should be safe in the crowds here But stay inside if you can
I must lose Inspector Shambar Joes nervous, just at the name I think hes in on the murder What do you think is his game?
Ill see the two of you later Lee says and leaves; then he turns Sees Joe and A, theyre hand-holding Inside Lee something just burns
Prescotts now updating Foster Mrs Kings friend had a gun Now we must take Joe Kings children No, Foster says, Were not done
But its the only way to King Once we do that, all is lost Were connected, they will find us But be ready, Fs riposte
Back at Lees, Shambars complaining At the huge Dooleys bar bill Petty cash will reimburse you Next day will be better still
Lee pours them milk in the kitchen Where are the cookies? I ask Laces the milk with a drug then S drinks Lees achieved his task
Mrs Mcs; Joe and Amanda Tripping along memry lane I took the wrong way home, this time Dont worry, youre not to blame
You saved our lives in the libry James Bond films, Amanda said Oh, says Joe, Yeah, says Amanda Oh, well, at least were not dead
What happened Joe? asked Amanda It was a fluke, when I found Someone was changing delivries Cooking the books, Ill be bound
I went to see the Prime Minster And then the shooting started Taking the food from the starving From ethics they have parted
Amanda asked, Can you prove it? Its right here, but I cant go I should have stayed out of all this How could you? Its what you do
Sat on the bed, they hold hands now For they both need the support Then theres a knock at the room door Lees there, with a glance hes caught
The hands; just as A then lets go Of Joes hand, self-consciously Would you rather be alone, now? Mr Stetson, come in, please
Shambars drugged on zono-methol Should stay asleep for a while So whats the plan, Joe? Lee questions I need to look at their files
The invoices at EAO Should show the discrepancies You know what your looking for, yeah? Lets go, then Getting the gist?
At EAO, they all break in Joe and Amanda and Lee But when he looks theyre all missing There are no records to see
What about Shambar? Lee then says If hes involved he might talk We could give him a nightmare See? As hand - Lees back, as they walk?
Back at Lees, Shambar is knocked out Joes nervous, gun in his hand Shambar, youve got 30 seconds This is not going as planned
Youll have to knock him around some Joe doesnt do that, you know? Amateurs I think Lees thinking Uh-huh No tough guy is Joe
Sweetheart, shake him really hard now Joe nods, he tries then Come on Just then Shambar, he rolls over Hello, Joe Whats going on?
Joe kneels Mr Prime Minister? I cant believe it, he says A & Lee exchange their glances Confusion, they just cant guess
I thought you were dead? Joe queries Smiling, Shambar-PM says Reports of my death were greatly Exaggerated, I guess
At Lees apartment, theyre making Coffee for all, PMs tired America is exhausting Some coffee should get you wired
Then Lee hands PM a coffee But the PM is not daft He takes Lees cup away from him Look at Lees face what a laugh!
What happened in Estoccia? At my office, Shambar stood Waiting with a gun to shoot me I shot him first, I am good
Then Joe said, Shambars accomplice Tried to kill me, but he missed Then panicked, said how you were dead How does Joe know of this twist?
I could see the plan against me And I knew Joed help me out So you decided to stay dead? Safer that way, Ive no doubt
But youve already been framed, Sir Being alive makes it worse Lee then has an epiphany Only one man knows, Lees terse
Joe, you have shared your suspicions Since then, someone wants you dead How do we prove it, though? Joe asked Same way as if a snakes dead
What did Lee say then? A dead snake? What is he talking about? Snakes and their biting or something Hes cracking up, Ive no doubt!
Foster res, somebodys knocking Whats so important? F yells Lee smiles, Oh just how much freedom Youll have. Or maybe the cells?
Your allegations are major Can you corroborate them? Gentlemen? Lee invites them in Foster is shocked at the men
Standing before him is Joe King And the PM but hes dead? Lees looking cool in that jacket! Good day, Foster, Lee then said
Arlington High theres a phone call For Mr Friar, but no Its Foster calling for Prescott Hanging up, hes gotta go
A drops the boys off at the school VP asks what is happning Says that the man makes her nervous As spider sense is tingling!
Whos here again? asks Amanda Your detective, dont you know? Watching the boys cos your husbands Likely to meet them, and go
Nervously, A steps from her car Can you show me where he is? VP says, Ill check where hes gone On the phone, A gets to biz
Lee, are you there? Yes, Amanda Theres an emergency here Im at the school, someones after The boys I think, and hes near
Hes also been looking for Joe I shouldve guessed this could be Stay on the air, then, Amanda Well be right there, Joe and me
The VP says, No ones seen him She and A search everywhere In a classroom or in the gym Oh, they could be anywhere
In the gym, Jamie is bouncing On a trampline, up and down Doing a flip he falls over You messed up then! Jamie frowns
Prescott walks in with his shades on Philip and Jamie, they fight Philip says you just need balance Demos a flip. What a flight!
Jamie tells Philip, Oh, thats good Then they see Prescott come near Hi he says. The boys say Hi back What he wants so fars unclear
A tells Lee shes off to the gym Were here, now is Lees reply Joe leads the way to the gym then And right behind him, our guy!
A enters the gym, they see her Hey, Mom! P calls, Wanna jump? Fellas! she yells, but he grabs them Taking a gun hes no chump
Dont move, Mrs King, I mean it Lee is behind him. She sighs A talks to Lee with their eyespeak Mom? Jamie plaintively cries
Lee dives right over the gym horse Rolling to where Prescott stands Turning, he releases the boys Boy, is Lee good with his hands!
Lee punches him in the stomach Knocking the gun from his hand But Prescott returns the favor Hits Lee, to the mat, he lands
Prescott then jumps towards the gun Taking a leap, so does Joe The PM runs to the boys, there Looks like theyve rescued them. Oh!
Prescott and Lee are still fighting While the boys run to their mom Lee and Prescott near the tramp now Prescott falls but Lee climbs on
On the trampline, Lees now jumping Up and down and up and down Grabs a rope and tarzans outwards Then swings back and knocks him down
This time Lee gets in a right hook Prescott he falls to the mat Cringing in pain, Lee looks at him PM shakes his hand. Thats that!
The snake bit the PM tells him Dont you starts all I can say Lee looks over at Amanda A looks back Oh what a day!
Its tag time now at Maplewood Dotty and A plant something Noisily the boys come in then From football with dad, Joe King
The boys they are still excited Dotty has dinner all planned Hot dogs, to keep up with the theme Against the fence, Joe just stands
Have a good time? asks Amanda I sure did, they had such fun Why dont we go for a pizza? Id love it, Gardenings done
Dooleys now, romantic music Youve changed, Amanda, Joe said Youre not the woman I divorced Nor the woman I married
Ive just got some outside interests Amanda smiled at the thought Whatever they are, they suit you As each others hands are sought
You mean you wont go backwards then? Forwards. The future looks great Joe smiles, So lets have some music? Pondering As happy state
Romantic music is now heard Lee turns away from the bar As Joe and A dance together Lee watches them from afar
He sees them dancing so closely Then A leans back in Joes arms Looking across into Lees eyes Shes fallen hard for Lees charms
