WGI Championships 2003 - Day 3 - The Finale All the scores have been counted, and the winners have been announced. The University of Dayton Arena and Ervin J. Nutter Center had a record number of spectators to watch the final performances of the 2003 season.
This afternoon, the final day of the 2003 Sport of the Arts World Championships, was one we will never forget. At UD Arena, the group Lealta from San Diego, California won Independent Open Class with a score of 95.70. Lealta made history as the group was the 2002 Independent A Class Champion, only the second unit to win Independent A and Open Class in consecutive years. The competition was close in Scholastic Open, but Centerville High School from Centerville, Ohio ended up on top with a 97.15. Centerville was the first color guard to win the Scholastic Open division when it was introduced in 1993.
At the Nutter Center, 8 Percussion World Champions were crowned with Clovis East High School of Clovis, California winning Scholastic A with a 94.45. Independent group L.E.A.P from Lindenhurst, Illinois was awarded the gold medal in Independent A class with a score of 86.65. Portsmouth High School from Portsmouth, New Hampshire became the 2003 Scholastic Concert Open Champion, scoring 92.40. Northcoast Academy won the Independent Open Class with a 93.35. Thomas Worthington took the Scholastic Open Class with a score of 94.40.
The Nutter Center percussion final performances left the crowd in awe. Fort Mill from Fort Mill, South Carolina won their first title of Scholastic Concert World Class Champions with a score of 95.30. The Blue Knights from Denver, Colorado took the gold medal in Independent World Class with a score of 96.25. The Scholastic World Finals competition concluded the evening with Winston Churchill High School from San Antonio, Texas winning the gold medal with a score of 93.20.
