Hellbrunn Palace and Trick Fountains
In 1612, Salzburg's Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems commissioned a country residence to be built at the foot of the well-watered Hellbrunn Mountain. Water was the central theme in the palace's design. The huge garden, containing many "trick" fountains, has been the main attraction at Hellbrunn for almost 400 years. Here you can see the Archbishop's outdoor banquet table. Each seat (except for his) included a jet of water that would squirt the bottom of whoever sat there. The guest could not stand as it was considered impolite to stand before the archbishop did. A few brave souls tested the seats during our tour.
