Italy

The massive fortress of Castel Sant’Angelo was started in 139 AD as the mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian. Since then it has been a medieval citadel and prison, and a place of safety for popes during political unrest. A corridor links it with the Vatican Palace.
Our travels also took us to Ferrara. Until the mid 1700’s when Italy was finally united, each city basically had its own king or ruler. There are castle throughout the Italian countryside and ruminants of this time. Some kings encased their towns in walls to establish boarders and protect their territory. Ferrara is one of the region’s finest walled towns. The noble family took control of this town in the late 13th century, holding power until 1598.
